Once again friends and teammates of John Newman gathered in Cooperstown on Saturday, September 19 to play a doubleheader in his memory. John played on MSBL teams on Long Island and in CDMSBL for many years and we lost him during the season in 2023 to pancreatic cancer at age 62. . He played for the Twins and the Arachnids in CDMSBL. He played his last CDMSBL game in June 2023 and was gone five weeks later. Our doubleheader with the guys from Long Island serves as a fitting tribute to an extraordinarily good man that we will never forget. John coached young people in basketball and was also a high school baseball coach for many many years. A couple of highlights from the doubleheader Bill Chichester went 7-7for the day at the plate while Amber Ring was 3-5including a stand-up double in the second game. That girl will surprise you. Big Tom King 3-3 in the second game. Mike Arbour with a 3-3 game JEFF WHITEHEAD 3-4 in the first game our friend from Kansas City Jerry Weaver 4-7 in the two games. Eddie Nadeau 4-7in the two games hitting the ball real hard. Greg Mangione who is suffering from vertigo lately managed to get himself three hits over two games. Dave Plew 5-7 Dave Reed with a couple of hits including a double. And the venerable Wayne Nicholsen looking sharp on the mound . Oh yeah, Jim Edelman 2-5 for a very acceptable day. Jim Wing who was there for the first game was stellar behind the plate. Long Island won first game 12-9 while our local CDMSBL team won the second game 13-4. Everybody wants to do it again next year and that's the plan. Thanks for reading.
