Nicholsen also retires the WHIZ in the bottom of the inning without giving up a run. Both pitchers get the third out via a big K. Second inning Rick Saidenberg leads off with a long double in the right centerfield gap. Terry McCarthy sac bunts Saidenberg to 3rd. Friedman retires the next two batters on a strike out and a P-1. The Whiz break the ice in the bottom of the second as JEFF Friedman leads off with a long double to right field but was thrown out 9-4-5 trying to stretch it into a triple. One out. Paul Scuteri flies out to left for the second out. Warren Zeiser singles and steals second. Shane FLINT reaches on an infield error, Zeiser scores , Robert HOLMES is hit by a pitch and Joe Burns grounds into a fielders choice as Flint was tagged out trying to make it to third to end the inning. 1-0 Whiz after 2. New pitcher , Jim Macarelli, for the Whiz. Top of the third Frank Owens leads off with a single. Jeff Cohen singles. Craig Tynan lines out to short. JEFF WHITEHEAD lines out to left. Stefan Koutsakis hits his second single of the game knocking in two runs. Alex MARIN pops out to the pitcher to end the top of the third. Twins on top 2-1. Bottom of the third Doug REISINGER leads off with a double and comes around to score on a Gene Hallenbeck single. The WHIZ would get one more single in the inning but no more runs. Score tied 2-2 after 3 full. Top of the fourth with one out Terry McCarthy works a base on balls. Mike ARBOUR REACHES ON AN E-6. JOHN REEL LAYS DOWN A PERFECT BUNT BETWEEN THE pitcher AND THIRD BASE AND EARNS A CLEAN SINGLE TO LOAD THE BASES. FRANK OWENS STEPS TO THE PLATE , HITS A CLEAN SINGLE KNOCKING IN MCCARTHY AND THE TOP OF THE FOURTH ENDS WITH A 3-2 TWINS LEAD. Sorry for the capital letters I forgot to take off the CAP LOCK. Bottom of the fourth ZEISER leads off with a single and steals second. FLINT hits a grounder to short and Craig Tynan nails ZEISER trying to make it to third for the first out. HOLMES lines out to short. Joe Burns comes up with two outs and hits a long fly to left that JEFF WHITEHEAD gives everything he had to catch up with it, dives, rolls, sticks his glove up in the air and that's the third out of the inning. That was the catch of the year saving at least one run. Top of the fifth first two Twins batters go down . MARIN pokes a double. Saidenberg follows with a single knocking home MARIN. 4-2 Twins. Nicholsen comes out to warm up in the bottom of the fifth and his left foot lands in a hole and he has to leave the game before he throws a pitch in the 5th. Koutsakis enters as the reliever and retires the WHIZ 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth. The WHIZ third pitcher of the night, the side arm good pick off lefty, SHANE FLINT, ascends the mound. The Twins also go down 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. Bottom of the 6th first batter grounds out. JEFF Friedman reaches on an E-5. . Scuteri pops to 6 for the second out. Zeiser doubles scoring JEFF F. Flint lines out to short and the inning ends with a 4-3 game, Twins. Top of the seventh Cohen leads with a single. Tynan singles. WHITEHEAD SACS the runners into scoring position. One out. Koutsakis hits his third single of the night knocking home two more runs. Twins 6-3 after 6 1/2. Bottom of the seventh lead off hitter HOLMES walks. Joe Burns flies out deep to left. REISINGER hits a grounder to third and HOLMES is thrown out at second for the 2nd out. HALLENBECK is hit by a pitch. Hmm. Jim MACARELLI reaches on an error to load the bases. Barry Friedman it's a grounder to Tynan at short and he flips to Cohen at second to get Macarelli and the game is over. Twins win 6-3. The WHIZ HAD 8 HITS. ZEISER 3-3 and REISINGER 2-4. Both had a double . The TWINS had 13 hits with KOUTSAKIS 3-4, Tynan 2-4, Cohen 2-4, Saidenberg 2-3, and Owens 2-3. MARIN and Saidenberg each had a double. Koutsakis nails down the win pitching the final three innings for the Twins.Wayne Nicholsen pitched 4 grueling innings leaving with a 3-2 lead. He has been battling a painful knee and sciatica as well this season. The MAN will be, like me, 75 years old this February. I've been in this league a long time. Wayne is the most durable and effective pitcher I have seen over the long haul. He can also field like nobody's business and has a good bat when he's called upon to hit. And will you meet a nicer person? I don't think so. Who would not want him as a teammate? Why this man isn't in the Hall of Fame in CDMSBL is way beyond me.
