Ralph Caputo started for the Reds against Billy Chiichester for the visiting Cards in a game where the ump had a tight strike zone for both teams. It was a clean game with only 2 errors.
The Cards struck first with consecutive singles by Martin, Shultis, Hallenbeck, and McCarthy plating two before leaving the bases juiced to end the inning. The Reds responded in the bottom of the first with three runs on three hits by Hall, Mitchell, and Griffin. Cards 2 - Reds 3
The Reds added 4 more in the third on six hits with singles by Friedman, Mitchell, Griffin, Caputo, Durbak and the big two base knock by Reel before also leaving the bases loaded to end the third. Cards 2 - Reds 7
With two on and two outs McCarthy made a "rolling" catch to keep the Reds off the board in the fourth giving the cards a little momentum going into the 5th, where Al Freer singled and the next two batters walked, to load the bases. The Reds called on CB Abrams to face Hallenbeck with no outs. A Barry Bonds walk and then a dribbler back to the mound produced a 1-2 getting the first out. Another fielder's choice pushed a run across. A full count walk loaded the bases and the Cards pushed across another run before a grounder ended the inning with the Cards tightening things up at 5- 7. A single by Griffin and two stolen bases was followed by a Caputo single to add an insurance run with to score Cards 5 - Reds 8 after five.
The got a leadoff single over the centerfielders head to start things off but the reds were aided by a 6-4-3. Freer then singled for the second time but a pop up to the right side kept the cards off the board. In the bottom half of the frame Jaz took one for the team and proceed to swipe a couple of bags before Friedman delivered his third hit to plate the run and push the score to 5 - 9 after six.
With darkness coming on and the rain arriving Joe Burns came on the try to secure the win for the Reds in the top of the seventh. With 1 out Hallenbeck singled again. McCarthy then hit a deep fly to center. Unfortunately, the centerfielder was playing deep for the heart of the lineup. With two outs Meyers singled, Chichester walked, Potash singled and Gomez walked and the score was 7-5 with bases loaded. On a full count Burns got the final on a swinging K to end the game with a score of Cards 7 - Reds 9
