The Yanks outhit, outpitched, and outplayed the Cubs on Friday night, in game 1 of the Finals, to the tune of 13-3.
The Yankees banged out 14 hits, led by Bob Altobelli's 3 hits and one loud out. Lex Herlett, Tony Parella, Darrell Duncan, and Jack Griffin all had two hits each.
The Cubs had just 5 singles, spread out in 5 different innings. They were able to put runners in scoring position in 5 of their 6 innings but could not get the key hits when thy needed them.
Dave Smitherman was the master of this gem, pitching 4-2/3 innings, giving up just 1 run. He scattered 4 singles and 3 walks (2 in the 5th), shutting down the Cubs offense without striking out a single batter. He was the definition of a cagey veteran pitcher all night.
The Series moves to game two, at the A-Diamond on Tuesday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:45 pm. Can the Cubs turn it around in game 2 and force a game 3. C'mon out and see for yourself!
