Curious game last night. Whiz Kids jumped out to 4-0 lead, Giants clawed back to take 6-4 lead, then lightning struck at the top of the 4th and the s*** was shot.
Some of us hung around late and drank fancy beer from Vermont. Thanks, Pete!
At this point, I have no info on plans to reschedule game. My understanding is that regular season games in these circumstances do not get continued, but are instead wiped clean.
None of us know how the wizened league elders will handle seedings in event it is not rescheduled. Currently Whiz is at 12-2 with game Thursday against the #4 seeded Cubs. Giants are, I believe, 11-3 with game Friday against the the 11-3-1 Yankees.
I'd like to start the Championship tourney on time, this coming monday August 5th. that dictates that this game won't be made up. so I will seed the top four the way I have in the past, partly because we have ties and partly cause we will have unequal games played. thus I use a point system as the base factor, 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie and derive total points. I divide that by the possible points you could have attained to give a percentage. a 11-3-1 record get you 23 points and you could have had 30 points form your 15 games. so 30 into 23 derives .767. if there are ties I use head to head record , then best win(s) , then worst loss(es) , the coin toss.
so we'll have those seeds after the final regular season games of the top four. though Cubs have clinched the #4 seed.
Justa note to players and GM's. though the schedule is out things can change with cancellations and i can't think of a year when we didn't re-do the championship schedule. In general when your game gets rained out I try to keep the field slots in tact and shift forward and perhaps try to catchup where we can by utilizing a gap in the schedule. this makes your planning easier. mine too! Another situation is when game is suspended. to be suspended it must reach 5 innings where the trailing team has batted at least five times. otherwise the game is considered a cancellation and it starts over . I encourage teams to make considerable effort to get a complete game in ; otherwise if it gets suspended the completion of the game will be held immedialtely prior to the destination game of the winner or loser which ever is scheduled first. so you might be showing up to your completion and playing a very short time and going home even when you win. For this reason and to maximize sunlight games are schedule to start at 5:30. completions of suspended games start at 5:15. As you might recognize this plan can have a domino effect on things . so to repeat make efforts to move games along . this can be done by hustling and off the field , having CR's and shared runners ready, limiting Time outs, etc. Also if you are resuming a game prior to the next game it is important to get the next game going ASAP. like in five minutes. the team waiting needs to warm up on the side and take the field when its available and start play, umpires will be ready. We lose sun light at a precipitous rate in August. and we are scheduled later than usual to finish this year.
Mercy rule applies as does the conceding a suspended game. you cannot borrow players and in suspended games you must adhere to the lineup but can substitute if new players come to the presumptive game. Hint a good way to do that is to use the shared position rule . you can institute that during the game per rule.
I predict some very good games , please keep sportsmanship in mind and enjoy the baseball.
