Cubs get by the Cards, with an early big inning, and strong pitching.

The Cubs improved to 4-1-1, with a 8-1 victory over the Cardinals, Wednesday night at New Scotland.

The Cubs offense took advantage of a big error, in the bottom of the 2nd inning to plate 7 runs.
The rally started with a Ron Lochner single, and Dave Mitchell followed with a hard grounder to third, that was snagged
by Bert Meyers, and it looked like it was going to be a routine double play, but Meyers' perfect relay was mishandled by the Cards' second baseman,
and both runners were safe. Now, I know that you can't assume the double play, but there really should have been 2 outs and nobody on, instead of
two guys on and nobody out. Big difference! Good teams take advantage of errors like that, and the Cubs certainly did that in this case. Andy Hoyle and Jerry
Rosen followed with solid singles and the Cubs were up 2-0. After a strike out, there was a fielder's choice sandwiched by two walks, which were followed by a second error
and RBI singles by Scott Ross and Paul Miles, and the Cubs were the owners of a 7-0 lead. Bert Meyers put an end to the rally with a Brooks Robinson like play on
another hard grounder off the bat of Mike Girard with the bases loaded. Bert in fact had 3 or 4 great plays at what was a very hot corner all night.

In the meantime, Mike Girard was keeping the Cards off of the score board. Girard pitched 5 shut out innings surrendering just 3 singles (no walks, no HBP's),
while striking out 4. Ralph Caputo came on for the last two innings, giving up just one meaningless run in the final two frames.

I must mention the defensive effort of John Sheehan, playing right field for the Cards. He made two great catches on hard hit balls, that certainly would have gone
for extra bases, had he not been there. Also, John Latorre deserved better, with his effort on the mound. He only gave up 8 hits in his 6 innings on the mound,
5 of which were in that fateful 2nd inning. Had that double play been turned, who knows how this game would have turned out.

A quick turn around for these Cubbies, as the come right back on Thursday night, at the A-Diamond versus the Americans. The weather should have something to say about this game,
and whether it gets played tonight.
