Last night's "winner-take-all" game was suspended after 6 innings, due to darkness, with the score at: Giants 6 Cubs 5
The game was as tight as the score suggests. The Giants scored first, in the top of the second inning, on a RBI single by Tom Maney. Freddy Pigeon had a big part in the rally as well, as his singlle with Tony Nardacci on first moved him into scoring position for Maney's clutch single.
The Giants would increase that lead to 2-0 in the 3rd, when Darrell Duncan got a 4-pitch walk to lead off the inning and stole second. A productive ground out to sent Duncan to 3rd with one out, and he scored on a Pete Geannelis RBI ground out to second.
The Cubs fought bac in the bottom of the 3rd, when Ralph Caputo led off with a single. Bob Coffey laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, to move Caputo to second, and after a walk to Scott Ross, Jim McQuade delivered Ralph with a RBI single. Mike Girard followed with a 3-run home run to left, and the Cubs were now in front 4-2.
Both teams were unable to score in the 4th, but the lead changed hands again, in the top of the 5th as the Giants plated 4 runs to take a 6-4 lead. Tom Maney again was right in the middle of the rally, as he led of with a single. Jeff Madden followed with a single. After a pop out to first, the Cubs helped the Giants rally out with an error on a grounder to third. The next Giants batter grounded out 1 to 3, and that would have been the end of the rally, but Pete Geanellis was hit with a pitch and Rn Massaroni followed with a RBI single. Bob Bolt and Nardacci followed with singles of their own, and all of a sudden the Giants held a 2-run advantage.
The Cubs did not back down, as Mike Girard was walked with one out, and was moved to second on a wild pitch. Taking advantage of the pitcher concentrating solely on Ron Lochner representing the tying run), Girard got a big jump from second as he attempted to steal 3rd base. The catchers hurried throw was wide of the mark, and Girard continued on to score the Cubs' 5th run. Bolt got the always tough Lochner on a great change up and got the next hitter on a come backer, to get out of the inning with a one run lead.
Both teams put runners in scoring position, but were unable to score, in the 6th inning, and it was at that point that it became too dark to play any more. The game was suspended and the two managers agreed on a date and time to finish this exciting game. Wednesday night at New Scotland Town Park is the place and 6:00 pm is the time.
Don't you dare miss the exciting conclusion of this championship game!
