Cubs head into the Top Four Round Robin at 12-1.

The Cubs bounced back nicely from their first loss of the season on Monday, with a 13-0 win over the short-handed Whiz Kids.

It was a bad night for a Whiz Kids team, that was missing 4-5 of their top players, to run into a Cubs team looking to
get back on track after playing their worst game of the season two nights earlier.

The Cubs pounded out 13 runs, on 14 hits. With 14 hitters in the line-up, 13 of the Cubs hitter got up only 2 times each (due to just
batting in just 4 innings), yet 11 of the 14 hitters had at least one hit, and two of the other three reached on walks.
Ron Lochner, PJ Martone, and Kevin Jackson all had two hits each. Jerry Rosen led the way with 3 RBI's and Lochner, Jim McQuade,
and Al Williams had 2 RBI's each.

The Cubs defense which kicked the ball around, to the tune of 5 errors in 6 innings on Monday night, played an error-free five innings,
with nice running catches in the outfield by Scott Ross and Paul Miles, and solid play all around the infield.
This solid defense supported outstanding pitching from Ralph Caputo (3 innings) and Bob Coffey (2 innings).
Ralph threw the first 3 shutout innings and gave up just one single (Danny Maguire) and 1 walk, while striking out 3.
Bob shut out the Whiz for the last two innings giving up just 2 singles (John Cortese and Reggie Flansburg).

It was a "perfect storm" that caused the Whiz to end up on the wrong side of a 13-0 loss.
The loss drops them to 6-6-1 on the season, which puts them in the double elimination tournament that starts next week.
On the bright side they are hoping to get their ace and best player, Mike Kane, back from the DL next week.
Good luck to the Whiz, and the other 5 teams that will be battling each other over the next two weeks to gain the 5th and final spot in the
Double Elimination Championship Tourney, that starts on August 9th.

Meanwhile the Cubs turn their attention to the Top 4 Round Robin, where they need to win 2 out of their final 3 games to sew up
the top seed for the championship tourney.

Next up: Game one of the Top 4 Round Robin next Tuesday evening (07/24/18) at the C-Diamond in Schenectady, vs the 4 seed (TBD).

Mike, You've put together a strong team. Congratulations on your success. You failed to mention your stellar play at shortstop. There were some bets made, and money exchanged, on whether or not you would make that part of your post!

This year's schedule in the 55 Division is new. The Whiz Kids finished round one in third place. That gave us the privilege of playing the Cubs, Giants (twice), and the Yankees in round two. A formidable schedule, even when healthy.

We just finished a stretch of 5 games in 10 days. That's tough at any age. The cooler sessions dwindled to just two Whiz last night (Thanks for the beer, Angel!).

As Mike alluded to, we (teams seeded 5-10) begin a double elimination playoff format next week. Let's hope that all teams are rested and healthy.

Good luck to all,

Jim Porter

Thanks, Jim.
I think.
Good luck in the play-in tourney.

Religions around the world all have writings that concern some type of an apocalyptic event, which will be heralded by certain signs that foretell this catastrophic end times scenario. Bob Coffey on a pitchers mound features prominently in many of these.
It may be time to duck and cover.

Thanks Pete. I'm rarely recognized for my part in the Apocalypse.

Hey Bob,

Tonight's game has been moved again: to Legion Field at the southern end of 787.

Let me know that you got this.
