In the future, can we only PPD games when it's actually raining and/or the field becomes unplayable.
These Dopler/Accuweather/whatever sites many times show rain for a certain time and it doesn't materialize. That's what happened last night and it turned out to be a great evening for baseball at New Scotland Town Park.
If we show up and it ultimately rains, so be it. But many times threats blow over and the baseball gods side with us.
It's frustrating to now have to reschedule a game that we should have played. It's happened way too many times.
Sometimes we have no choice if the people that run the field make the call but other times the managers make that call. There is a big difference between the threat of thunderstorms and a completely dark green radar screen with the forecast of an inch of rain that should be considered and also how many games need to be made up.
John - that was on me.....one storm supposedly went thru, but field was OK; then all the forecasts showed strong storms going thru between 6:00p - 8:00p, and as you say, map was covered in green. Turned out to be a bad call, and next time unless I'm drowning, we're playing.
I used to have to make these decisions during my old Pirates days. My thought process evolved over the years. I used to worry a lot about the guys having to travel, the unnecessary hassle, the uncertainty. Wanted to spare them. But after a bad call or two, I came to the conclusion: "Tough. That's baseball. You gotta show up."
So unless, as Jimmy K says, the field is unplayable or the signs are unmistakeable, you don't cancel. Showing up is part of the game.
Of course, within that there will always be gray areas. But once I eliminated trying to be a nice guy, the decision-making (which used to cause great anguish) became much easier.
Baseball is like parenting. Showing up is 90% of the deal.
