45+ Yankees Kick Off Season With 9-0 Win v. Cyclones

It was a not-so-beautiful day for baseball (about 60* and a constant drizzle/light rain) but both the Cyclones and Yankees wanted to play ball and managed to get in six innings before the field became hazardous for continued play and the Yankees played an extremely good defensive game - especially considering field conditions - and shutout the Cyclones on just two hits.

Outstanding offensive numbers for the Yankees include:

Mark Marshall: 1-for-4, 3 R, 2 SB
Eddie Alvarez: 1-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB, 2B, 2 RBI
Jack Griffin: 1-for-2, 3 R, BB, HBP, SB, RBI
Jim Bonaparte: 1-for-2, 2 BB, 4 RBI

Yankee pitching battled Cyclones hitters as well as less-than-desirable mound conditions all day and won both battles handily:

Ed Bitner: 4 IP (W) 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 4K
Greg Witalec: 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2K

Up next for both teams are Saturday games (since Mothers Day is Sunday this week).

The Yankees will take on the Giants at 3:00 p.m. at New Scotland. The Yankees have a revamped roster and really look strong. If the traditional powerhouse teams of the division fall asleep or let their guards down against this version of the Yankees they will be in for a huge surprise. This is a very strong Yankees squad in 2018.

The Cyclones have some new faces as well - some shaking off the rust of 20 years off from the game. However, the building blocks are in place and the Cyclones should see steady improvement over the course of the season. The Cyclones test their mettle again on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Watervliet High School against the Shaskys.
