The Marlins took game one of the best of three semi-final series by the score of 5-1.
The Fish got on the board in the top of the first, on a single by Scott Ross, walk to Wayne Newcomb, a wild pitch, and a sac fly by Jim McQuade.
They padded their lead to 3-0, in the 3rd, on a single and stolen base by Scott Ross, and a RBI single from Mike Girard. Girard then stole second and scored on two consecutive Whiz Kids' errors.
The fifth inning saw the Marlins scoring two more, to make it 5-0, and again Ross was the instigator. He again led off the inning with a single, and stole second (familiar story). He moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a Girard RBI single. Girard again stole second and scored all of the way from second, on a ground out to the mound. The throw to first brought the first baseman into the baseline and he got tangled up with the runner. Girard never stopped running and scored without a throw. The Marlins lead was now 5-0.
Defensively the Marlins were just about perfect. There were no errors, and just one passed ball and a catcher's interference. Meanwhile, Girard was keeping the Whiz Kids bats silent throwing a complete game 3-hitter, walking none and hitting just one batter. The Marlins' starter recorded 10 strike outs, and only lost his shut out in the bottom of the seventh, when the Whiz recorded 2 of their 3 hits. John Cortese got the RBI on a bloop single, with two outs in the final frame. Mike Kane and Brian Musella had the other two singles for the Whiz.
Scott Ross was 4 for 4 on the night, with 4 stolen bases, and scored 3 times. He is now 9 for 9 in the playoffs, and has scored 5 times. Girard was 3 for 4, and is now 6 for 8 in his two playoff games, with 4 RBI, and 4 runs scored.
Game two is Monday night, at Watervliet High School, at 5:45 pm It should be a great matchup.
