The Whiz Kid and Yanks played two games last week, with the outcomes of those games finalizing the standings in the 55+ Division.
Game 1 was played Monday at New Scotland. Great pitching duel between Mike Kane (WP, 7-2) of the Whiz, and Chris Abrams of the Yanks, with the Whiz winning 4-2. Dan Maguire's 2-run single keyed a 4-run 4th, as the Whiz took a 4-0 lead. The Yanks narrowed the gap to 4-2 on Joe Herbieux's 2-run single in the 6th. After a leadoff single to Matt Kelly in the top of the 7th, Kane set down the nexr three batters to secure the win.
Game 2 was played Friday, again at New Scotland, with a light rain shower greeting us. On the mound for the Whiz was Jim Preller, who had just pitched 5 innings on Wednesday in a victory over the Cards. Abrams was back on the hill for the Yanks. The Yanks score 4 in the top of the first, the big blow being a double off the bat of Dean Little. Whiz got one back in the bottom of the frame, when Reggie singled in Brian Musella, who was hit by a pitch. They closed the gap to 4-3, as Preller singled in Musella and Ed Draves. A 4-run 6th gave the Whiz their first lead, with Preller driving in two with a double. Yanks tie it up in the 7th on some shaky defense, and an RBI single by Paul Post. They take an 8-7 lead in the top of the 8h on an RBI single from Abrams. With darkness falling, the Whiz had one last chance. Ed Klopfer singled with one out, and stole second. He scored the tying run on an error. With a runner on second, Abrams gets the next 2 batters to fly out. Game ends in an 8-8 tie.
Whiz Kids end up as regular season champs with a 12-2-1 record. Giants finish at 11-4. Yanks get the 3rd seed at 10-5-1.
