Field Conditions Misinformation

Yesterday the 33+ Division was told very early on that the fields in Schenectady Central Park were unplayable yesterday (Monday, May 22) - despite the fact that I personally stopped by the fields and noted that even with the rain we received over the weekend that there was no standing water at the "C" Diamond and only one small puddle on the first base line of the "B" Diamond - and that was at 8:00 in the morning.

At approximately 12:00 p.m., our opponent's manager stopped by the "B" Diamond to check on field conditions for our game later that day and noted that the puddle at the "B" Diamond was gone and that the field was dry.

We were shortly thereafter notified that the fields were deemed unplayable for games starting at 5:45 p.m.

We were then left scrambling around looking for playable fields and I actually took time from work to search for a playable field for our game; driving around observing field conditions myself and reporting back to the commissioner. And the commissioner was left scrambling trying to check with other field contacts anywhere in the Capital Region to move these games to.

The City of Schenectady had to do little more than unlock the gates (although dragging the infields and preparing the pitchers' mounds would have been appreciated - while not necessary) but instead decided to take the easy route and tell us "no games." Don't we pay for the privilege to use the fields? I understand that sometimes complications happen with last minute weather conditions, but this was hardly last minute - and we as managers took the time to check the fields ourselves so we could notify our players. There is no excuse for cancelling those games yesterday; at least, there is no acceptable excuse. We played in terrible conditions at Blatnick Park just one week prior - standing water in the hitters circle around home plate on on the third base line; a LAKE in centerfield and extremely soft conditions throughout the outfield; 45*F with a wind chill near freezing; etc. - and we couldn't play in yesterday's conditions?

Lastly, I went ahead and stopped by Central Park on the way home from work and took note of the field conditions. Both the "B" and "C" Diamonds were not only playable, but you could argue that the water they absorbed over the weekend actually made conditions ideal. Plus, the sun had been shining and the breeze had been blowing all day which helped dry the surfaces to create what should have been considered the ideal conditions for a ball game.

Attached are some photos of the "B" and "C" Diamond and their "unplayable conditions" from Monday, May 22 at approximately 5:00 p.m. - 45 minutes prior to game time.

Unfortunately Rob it's their field and their call. With intermittent showers forecast yesterday they probably didn't want to expend taxpayer resources and then have a 5pm rain wash it all away.

Consider it fiscal responsibility by a municipality

Posts like this are an excellent way to alienate field relationships.

I disagree, John. A municipality could still be "fiscally responsible" and send a human being to the fields to see they were playable. And spend little-to-no resources to check the FREE NOAA radar or check weather.com to see there were no showers anywhere in the area after 10:00 am. That was a purely bad judgement call.

And if a post pointing out bad judgement on behalf of a government employee loses the fields then it just deepens the mistrust that the public has with its government. And I say this as a government employee myself. If I had made a similar bad call in my Field of work, I can expect taxpayers to call me out.

You're certainly entitled to disagree Rob but again it goes back to their field their call as to whether to play games. You could certainly talk to Bones about talking to them but my guess is in the grand scheme of all the city does one rec baseball game just isn't that big a deal to them.

It isn't the first time a game was cancelled that could have been played and it certainly won't be the last. Someone makes a judgement call and sometimes it is right and sometimes it is wrong. I know there were times when I worked on the little league fields for hours and then half an hour before game time it rained and all that work was wasted.

Zero politics, just city workers.

Not to mention in a park that was almost closed to all parkgoers due to budgetary issues.

Our game was moved as well, and I'm a schenectady resident as are most of my teammates. Oh, the horror of having to drive to a different field.

LOL Tommy - Reading comprehension FAIL. Typical. And you want to know who drove around looking at fields and confirmed that YOUR game could be played at CABR? And you got to play your game. You're welcome.

And now to the rational conversation....

John: "Someone makes a judgement call and sometimes it is right and sometimes it is wrong. I know there were times when I worked on the little league fields for hours and then half an hour before game time it rained and all that work was wasted."

I guess that's my beef. It's o.k. that judgement calls are made and sometimes they're wrong. But this is an example of one where if someone from the City just put eyes on the field and then checked the weather it would have been an easy call. Are they busy? Probably. Is it "their field"? Yes. But we do pay to use them and we should be allowed to when the conditions are good. It's not like they had to do any work (although dragging the infield would have been nice) - they only had to unlock the gates. No work would have been wasted.

I am to understand the contact for Schenectady Parks and Rec. was off on Monday which helped to complicate matters. So perhaps we can open a discussion with whomever made the call to cancel and find out what happened so we can avoid it in the future? It seems reasonable. Shouldn't every field contact be expected to give us an afternoon update as to field conditions? If they did that on Monday both games would have been played as scheduled.

This is AMATEUR baseball.
Nobody cares.
We've been hearing the same nonsense for 20 years.
Find something else to do. We have officials in our league that want the best for everyone. It doesn't always work out the way we 'd like all the time, but hey the schedule will be played and we will see the field again.
Sorry your team didn't grace us with their playing ability, but no body missed them, we were busy living our lives.

If you don't care, why play?

Funny though.... You don't care and you say, "nobody cares..." Yet, here you are....
