In a taut, 7-inning game Monday night at New Scotland, that was 3-3 after six, the Americans' Mike Labarge, who had taken one for the team in the left ribs, worked his way around to third and scored what became the winning run with two outs on Ken Zimmer's right-field single in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the frame, the Peppers posted two quick outs when Paul Cerone bunted, stole second and made it to third on Howard Becker's single. With two outs and two on, the next Pepper hit into the old snake bite, the short-to-second fielder's choice, and the Americans (1-1) exited with their first victory.
Glen Rugen (2-3 with a double) and Nick Kanellis (2-2 with a double) were the Americans' top hitters, while Jim Kisselburgh notched five Ks over as many innings to get the win. Adam Zafran went 2-3 for the (0-2) Peppers, and Vinny Koster got on base three times, stealing two of them, and scoring once.
