Back on the horse this morning at 9:00am at Jack Russell stadium in Clearwater, and the Capitals came out strong, plating 5 in the top of the first. We never trailed in the time-limited 8-inning game...though it got "interesting" a couple times. Most notably in the 8th, which we entered up 10-5. The Carolina Colts scored three and had the bases loaded with 2 outs before Chris Abrams induced a game-ending infield popup. Capitals 10, Colts 8.
John Weber went 7 2/3 innings on the mound to earn the win. Abrams picked up a 2-pitch save.
The Capitals showed good plate discipline in this one, using 7 hits, 5 walks, and 3 hit batters, along with 7 stolen bases (who said this team doesn't have much speed?) to score 10 runs. Don Ball continued to impress with two base hits and reached base in all 4 plate appearances. Other hits came from Cortese, Surin, Alston, Borwick, and a bomb of an RBI double by Mike White over the left fielder's head despite a strong wind blowing in.
The defense made 3 errors, which led to some Colts' runs, and made J-Web have to work his escape artist magic, but it was better than the first game.
Two days in, Capitals are 1-1, with a 5:00pm match on Tuesday against a very good NJ Reds bunch.
I'm so impressed with the way our CDMSBL ballers are representing our great region. Our success reveals just how strong of a league we have top to bottom.
