The fall-ball matchup between the guys from the BABL and the CDMSBL was an epic battle of great baseball and the Berkshire boys downed your hometown heroes by a score of 7-5 on a ninth inning rally.
The game got off to a great start when Jerry Solomon of the 33+ Padres took care of the top of the order in 1-2-3 fashion. Then, the boys from New York got the offense going early. Andy McCauley of the 33+ Dirtbags lined a single to CF. Darren Foote of the 33+ Bears was then HBP, Eric Solomon (33+ Padres) walked to load the bases and Rob Wadsworth (33+ Bears) walked to force in a run. With one out, Mike Ferraro (33+ Yankees) lines a single to left scoring Foote but Eric Solomon was thrown out trying to score on an excellent throw from the Berkshire left fielder. Bobby Poulin (33+ Dirtbags) would deliver a two-out RBI single scoring Wadsworth and the CDMSBLers would take a 3-0 lead into the second inning.
A leadoff walk and a subsequent error would lead to a run for the Berkshire squad in the top of the second - but that lone unearned run was all Jerry Solomon would allow in his four innings of work against a very good Berkshire lineup.
Andy McCauley would lead off the 3rd with another single to CF and would later score on a wild pitch. On the play, the Berkshire catcher would rifle a throw to the plate with the pitcher covering and McCauley was hit in the eye with the throw (see picture attached!).
The scoring remained quiet as each team would have only a few baserunners here and there and the pitching and defense really took over in the middle innings. The score was 4-1 heading to the 8th inning. Andy McCauley pitched the 5th and 6th innings for New York and allowed only three runners on one hit batter, one walk and one single. Rob Wadsworth pitched a clean 7th inning but struggled a bit with control in the 8th walking three and uncorking a couple of wild pitches even though he struck out the side. But the boys from New York would add an insurance run when Eric Solomon would draw a one out walk and Wadsworth would follow with a walk of his own and Mike Ferraro would again deliver with a two-out RBI single to RF scoring Solomon and the CDMSBLers would enter the ninth inning up 5-3.
Unfortunately for your heroes, the wheels came off the bandwagon and the Berkshire bats came alive and were aided by two critical errors as the first four hitters of the inning would score (two HBP, 2 1B, 1 ROE and 1 PB) even though New York's closer Bobby Poulin struck out the side in the ninth. And, unfortunately for your hometown heroes, there was no epic comeback in the works this time as the New Yorkers went down in order to fall by a final of 7-5.
There were some great numbers for your boys in the blue uniforms:
Andy McCauley went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, 2 broken bats and 1 cut open eye Mike Ferraro went 2-for-2 and reached base all four times with 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP Rob Wadsworth also reached base all for times going 1-for-1 with 3 BB, 1 R, 1 RBI Kevin Barbaro (33+ Bears) went 2-for-3
On the pitching side:
Jerry Solomon - 4 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 2 H, 1 BB, 1 HB, 4 K Andy McCauley - 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 HB, 1 K Rob Wadsworth - 2 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 0 H, 5 K
The two managers will again field a squad for another game next week in Chatham. Come on out and check us out and if you want to show those Massachusetts boys what we're made of, contact Rob Currier and get on this team and let's win for CDMSBL pride!
- As an aside, the guys from Massachusetts as well as those of us in the CDMSBL who have never had the pleasure of playing at the Chatham field before all commented on how beautiful that field is. It's late in the season, it's been a dry summer and that field could not have been in better shape. We need to desperately use that field for league games as much as possible. Don McComb of the 45+ Brewers maintains a magnificent field down there and we should utilize that as much as we possibly can. Hats off to the Chatham boys.
