Please explain to me how if personalities were not a factor, a guy who took 3 losing teams along with their egos and personalities and some incredible personal challenges does not get real consideration for manager of the year?? Look as hard as it is for me to take personalities out of it, unless you're going to give it to Bonaparte for his incredible run with the Indians, you have to consider Kohls. Am I missing something?
We have a managers only e-mail chain going regarding this very topic and I will post here what I wrote in that e-mail:
--------------------
This is not just directed at Eric, but represents my opinionated answer to Erics greater question of what qualifies someone for Manager of the Year:
Everyone has individual opinions as to what qualifies someone as manager of the year. If there was only one set of criteria then, quite honestly, there is only one choice: Jim Bonaparte. If you want to look at record, managing different egos and personalities in a very competitive league then how can you vote for anyone other than Jim? They finished 20-0. For the second year in a row.
If you want my sales pitch for myself, I didnt have the luxury of having players from other folding teams come to me. I built my roster the old-fashioned way of collecting free agents who werent in the league. If you gave me Mick Novak, Freddie Mac, Paul Moore, Len Hunter, Mike Kane and other players from the old Colt .45s and Pirates I think the Bears wouldve won 15 games. As it stands, I improved our record by 250% over the previous two years COMBINED. And I did so all while having other teams ACTIVELY ATTEMPTING TO POACH MY PLAYERS FROM ME DURING THE REGULAR SEASON.
I will be basing my votes for manager of the year based upon record, sportsmanship and integrity of competition. Managers who attempted to steal my players (or who had players on their teams actively trying to steal my players mid-season) so they could take a run at the Indians will not be receiving my votes. I will also not be voting for myself since I believe that to be a conflict of interest.
Rob Currier
p.s.: As an FYI now that the season for the Bears is over, I will be actively trying to improve the team for next year. All of those Bears players that other teams tried to take from me have committed to returning to the Bears and turning this team into a winner; so as it stands, I will be working in the off-season to acquire the players from other teams who will help achieve that goal.

I think Eric deserves recognition and he did a good job - but I think there can be a case made to vote for darn near every manager. If managing egos and personalities are to be a determining factor then I think we all deserve manager of the year.
I think if we're not going to take it seriously then we should scrap the awards all together.
However, I would say that there are plenty of people in this league that do take these things seriously including players who are not managers. If managers don't do a good job of making sure that all consideration is being given to their players then they run the risk of losing their team.
Personally? I don't care one way or the other but I do care that we have a league to play in. Those of us who aren't talented enough for the Twilight League find this to be a great alternative and at a level of competition worth playing for. My sole interest is making the league the best it can be for everyone who is interested in playing here and if that means that as a manager I need to take season awards seriously then I will.
I certainly won't speak for other teams, but I have players who care about this. I believe it's my job as their manager to ensure that their voice is heard.
Anyone here ever play in the YMCA basketball league?
They play, they win or lose, they have a beer or two and then they go home! No stats, no awards.........they just play the game!
C'mon guys................lighten up! It's recreation baseball. Play hard, have fun, have a beer or two and go home!
EVERYBODY in this league knows who's who and who does what. You need hardware on your mantle.........you can get a trophy on eBay for cheap!.............. "1973 - High Average (262) - Greater Schagitcoke Mens Bowling Association".......current bid $2.60 + shipping!
Any manager who hasn't been physically dismembered by the team they manage should share in the Manager of The Year Award!

Play ball!
Again, on a personal level, I agree with all of this. Competition should be settled on the field and we should all just shut up and play ball. However, there are plenty of people who care about this stuff and they should have a say.
And I'm putting a bid on the trophy! $2.60 is a bargain to be a champion!
