The Cubs played probably their best game of the year, Sunday morning, against the Braves, at New Scotland Town Park. The Cubs pitching gave up just 4 singles (no 2 in any one inning), and only one of those base runners went as far as second base. Chris Dunn pitched the first 3 innings, giving up just one single in each of his 3 innings, while striking out 3, earning his 5th win against zero losses. Mike Girard set the Braves down in order, in the 4th inning, and Rich Garbarino surrendered just one single, while striking out 2 in the 5th. The defense was flawless behind this pitching, and recorded the first shut out of the year for the Cubs.
The game was shortened to 5 innings, not only due to this shutout, but also due to the fact that the Cubs line-up pounded out 18 hits and 18 runs in just 5 innings. Andy Hoyle led the way with a 4 for 4 performance (3 singles and a double). Shawn Maney was 3 for 3, with a walk, 3 singles, and 4 RBIs. Ron Massaroni was 3 for 4 (3 singles - 3 RBIs), and Mike Girard and Jim McQuade added two hits each.
Scott Bonanno led the Braves offense with 2 singles. Jamie Leirey and Steve Schaefer had the other two hits for the Braves.
The Cubbies move to 10-1 with the 18-0 victory, and are peaking at the right time, as the final month of the regular season is underway. Time to gear up for the upcoming playoffs!
Mike, Hopefully the cooler weather will cool you guys down just a tad, your posts have me a little concerned about the end of the year matchup with you.
