A small, rag-tag group of Bears traveled to Johnstown to face the Yankees and squeaked out an 8-5 win.
Bears starter Curt Tucker went the distance and carried a shutout into the last inning but started to tire in the seventh. Determined to finish it himself, he kept his cool and completed the game for the Bears - which was most beneficial since the Bears only managed to have nine players attending.
Offensively for the Bears, Darren Foote went 2-for-4 with 2 R, 1 RBI and HBP; Rob Bialkowski went 2-for-5 with 4 RBI, Austin Blum was 2-for-4 with 2 SB and Curt Tucker was 2-for-3 with 2 BB and 3 Runs scored easily netting Tucker player of the game for his performance both on the mound and at the plate.
Since we only had nine, I will let Lex post any Yankees stats and they had compiled a bunch of hits - especially in the seventh inning because Curt Tucker didn't walk anyone and the Bears played errorless defense.
I should also take time to say that I realize that Johnstown can be a hike for a bunch of people (including two of my guys who live in Columbia County) but Lex and his team do a fantastic job out there and the field is is top-notch shape. The drive is well worth it and especially when you factor in that Lex picks up the tab for pizza delivered right to the dugout. Not too long ago, we had a team from Kingston in this league and every team had to drive down to Kingston for one game per season, Johnstown isn't as long a drive as Kingston and the Yankees are excellent hosts. Hopefully we can keep our relationship with Johnstown High School in good standing and continue to use that field for years to come. Hats off to Lex and the Yankees.
