Ok so the Giants run ruled another team and won the game. That's nothing new and that's not really the story. Here's what the real story is: I'm a umpire for the 55 division. As I was approaching the field through the outfield gate at Tawasentha field in Guilderland I met a older man who asked me if his son was playing this night. I said yes what's his name. He said Freddy Pidgeon. I was shocked because Freddy was 67 years old. So I asked the man how old he was and he said 94.
At this point I just couldn't believe what a lucky man Freddy was to still have his dad and that he was healthy enough to come to a game. I asked the man to follow me onto the field and told him he could sit in the dugout if he wanted to and he could be the bat boy. Lol. I walked him up to the Giants dugout and they graciously let him stay. The game started.
I couldn't stop thinking about how amazing this whole scene was when up to the plate walks Freddy with the bases loaded. Two pitches later he hits a ball over the fence in left center for a grand slam. It was truly a wonderful thing to see and I know his dad was loving every minute of it. Freddy's next time at bat the Cardinals gave him nothing to hit and he walked on 4 pitches.
Things kind of settled down after that and the game moved along. Now here comes where the CDMSBL record was set.
The Giants loaded the bases again and yes once again Freddy walked to the plate. This time the Cardinals gave him a pitch to hit and he literally hit the longest home run I've ever seen at Tawasentha Park. It was dead center and halfway up into the trees. As he was rounding the bases Jimmy K looked at me and said "that's gotta be a record" and I have agree. Two grand slams in one game. I challenge anyone to remember another player that has done that in our league at any level.
What a wonderful night for Freddy and his dad and for all the players and fans that witnessed a truly amazing baseball feat. A CDMSBL record I'm sure.
