The Cubs and Shaskys got together and enjoyed another beautiful Sunday afternoon at New Scotland. The Cubs came out on top in this contest, shutting out the Shaskys 8-0, behind the complete game 13 strike out performance of Mike Girard. Girard scattered 6 Shasky singles and 1 walk, while achieving a career high 13 strike outs. Who am I kidding?! I haven't struck out 13 batters in a season before. This game probably had a lot to do with the fact that my daughter was busy on this afternoon giving birth to my 6th grand child Maverick James Trask (I'll call him MJ)! Something special has always happened when I have played a game on the day that a grand child has been born.
Cubs catcher, Dave Mitchell, called a brilliant game behind the plate and added a double, single, and 2 RBI's. Ron Lochner added 2 RBI's, and Bobby Davis, Jim McQuade, and Shawn Maney all drove in a run each.
The Cubs were only able to manage 8 hits against the Shasky's ace Jim Tesoriero, who changed speeds and moved the ball around the zone to keep the Cubs hitters off balance all day.
Harvey Staulter was the top hitter for the Shaskys with two solid sinlges. Tesoriero added a single of his own in the final frame, that was by far the hardest hit ball by any Shaky hitter all day.
The Cubs celebrated the win in typical Cubs fashion with a top-notch cooler session. The Cubs took the opportunity, at this particular cooler session, to award Jim McQuade with a commemorative plaque, celebrating his 200th regular season win! The 200th win had come in the opening game of the season (a 9-3 victory over the Blue Jays). Jim has always been the heart and soul of this team, always conducting himself with class and dignity! It has been my great pleasure to play with him, and on his teams for the past 13 years. Here's hoping that there will be 13 more!!!
