Busy week for the newly expansion Giants with 3 games in 5 days.
On Monday the 16th, Tom Maney, Darrell Duncan and Jim Whitford each had three hits in a win over the Marlins. Jim Gedney had two hits to pace the Marlins who were missing several players.
On Wednesday, Tony Nardacci had 3 hits and Ron Smaka, Mike Lannon, Bill Smith, Jerry Solomon, Al Wolfer and Jim Whitford each had two in a win over the Hawks. Smith drove in two with a booming double that short-hopped the fence in left. The Giants had seven doubles, including two by Lannon and two by Solomon, and Fred Pidgeon hit the first of his two homers for the week before entertaining the troups with a comedy gig at New Scotland Town Park after the game.
On a side note, it was apparent that Solomon is now a member of Mike Girard's 45 Division Marlins team. Following his first double of the evening - a shot to deep left-center - Solomon got a great jump and stole 3rd base. Problem is, Billy Smith was already there! As one might imagine, the look on Solomon's face was priceless. We were all purty sure that Sol took a chapter out of the Girard School of Base Running book. Well done! Executed perfectly; made the book's illustration - and author - proud! We just wondered, too, that since there was a coach AND Bill at 3rd, and our jerseys are BRIGHT ORANGE, and the Hawks' JERSEYS, well, are not, how did Sol not see TWO bright orange jerseys near the bag? The cooler session, held at NSTP, was priceless. The Hawks players were laughing so hard that they waited about 5 minutes for Solomon to realize what he had done before tagging him out. Thanx Sol for the memory! It WILL last forever and is now a part of CDMSBL lore.
On Friday, the Giants committed 5 errors, but still came out with a 10-5 win over the Cardinals. Ralph Caputo went 4-for-4 and scored twice, Pete Geannelis went 3-for-3 with a double and booming triple and Fred Pidgeon singled and homered to deep left-center. By the time he crossed the plate, the game was almost postponed by darkness! We were calling for a courtesy runner before he reached 2nd base!
Up next for the 7-0 Giants are the Americans on Wednesday.
