FORT MYERS, Fla. Tim Brown, Bill Smith, Terry Barton, Paul Watson and Ralph Caputo each had two hits and John LaTorre pitched 4 innings of 2-hit ball Wednesday to lead the National Wind to a 13-1 victory over the Midwest 9.
The victory capped the Round Robin portion of the 60+ Classics Division of the Roy Hobbs World Series with the Wind winning each of their four games. We now await to hear from headquarters to see who we play in Thursdays seed-in game.
LaTorre gave up just two doubles, one in the second and one in the third, leaving both runners stranded with clutch pitches to end both innings. Wayne Newcomb pitched the 5th and 6th innings, giving up just one run which was aided by a soft fly ball to left that fell because the left-fielder never saw it till it hit the turf. Wayne Carney came on in the 7th to finish it up.
Smith, Barton and Jim Reynolds each drove in a run in the first inning before Smith crushed a double to deep left in the third to begin a 5-run uprising. After Caputo singled Smith to 3rd, Barton was hit by a pitch, Reynolds singled in a run and Jim LaTorre drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another. Skip Lyons, who caught all 9 innings, then singled in a run to cap the inning.
The Wind then calmed the next 3 innings before tacking on 5 more in the top of the 7th. Brown, Smith, Caputo and Barton each drove in a run with Barton whacking his second long double of the tournament over the right-fielders head. Watson capped the inning by lining a two-run single to center. Stay tuned. The fun is about to begin!
