With the advent of a new year almost upon us, took some time to think of the 3 greatest all around players that I have seen play, and where I fit in

My three
Roberto clemente
Ricky henderson
Hank aaron

seen Banks, Mantle, and Billy Williams all in mid to late 60's in Chicago's old Comisky and Wrigley. ain't seen much more.... in person if thats what you mean anyway.

have this photo of Mantle at bat for the stands.....far away with the 7 on his back. Uncle told me who he was . Whitey ford pitched. those names stcuk with me and not being from the North east you don't keep up with the team here. I know , unbelievable! but eventually I learned of the swagger and power and fielding of the Mick and that he was from Oklahoma.

and I fell for the Cubs some how. Ernie Banks was a first basemen by the time i saw him , always grinning. I figured that was good, Williams was the star of the club among many. cool about things, humble . chicago made that run that fell apart in August 69; to the Mets. broke my little twelve year old heart. but I stuck with them all these years. some closer than the others. I measure guys now based on those standards I perceived back then. jreel

Ricky Henderson ...... he was the first of the superstars who only hustled when he wanted ... kind of reminds me of Robinson Cano hmm

He was something else though!

Pete...Pete Rose is at the top of my list...All-Star at three different positions...NEVER took a play off...He was the cog in the Big Red Machine, and with the Phillies later....

The fact he is not in the Hall is an absolute joke..!

Bob Gibson - Unbelievable athlete...,competitor...Who else can boast that they were so good, baseball literally had to change their rules because of him when they lowered the mound..!!

Tommy Maney...!

I'm a bit younger so I'd have to say:

Barry Bonds
Ken Griffey Jr.
Yadier Molina

I saw mantle in 63? I think, at old yankee stadium. He hit a triple and the place went crazy.they played the white sox that day, and I remember "noneck williams" before the game hitting balls into the stands from left field for all the kids.

Ron Lochner, 3rd base (Alex Rodriguez), Randy Craft, shortstop (Derek Jeter) and Mike Ferraro, catcher (Francisco Cervelli). I don't have to put what baseball team I love but they are my three favorite players:)

LEx,
Never saw Ryan, but I did see a19 year old kid by the name of dwight gooden throw against the phillies. We had seats 3rows back and just to the left of the met dugout. The pop from his fastball when it hit the glove sounded like a whip crack . All the folks sitting around the dugout where laughing at the reactions from the phils batters , and even better, was the ribbing , hootin and hollerin from the met dugout yelling at the batters to dig in , Don't be afraid. Classic.
By the way, I didn't put any pitchers in my top 3, just players.
My top 3 pitchers: Bob Gibson
Nolan Ryan
Pedro Martinez

P.S.- is there anything funnier than Robin Ventura charging the mound against NolanRyan?.

Pete

or you in syracuse in '93 volunteering to hit the loud mouth chump from the City and watching him then jump back to his dugout as the ball left your hand...for a strike right down the middle...three times. and Bill Jones relieved to center field. jreel
