The Cubs took an early lead and never looked back, in a 11 - 1 rout of the Yankees in game one of their semi-final series.
The Cubs took a 2-0 lead, in the bottom of the 2nd inning, as they used singles by Randy Craft and Ron Massaroni, and an error on the Yankees left fielder to break out on top. The Cubbies scored 3 more times, in the 3rd, when Bryce Cutler singled and stole second with one out. Mike Girard traded places with Cutler on a line drive double to the left center field wall. Dave Mitchell followed with a RBI single, and stole second. Randy Craft immediately drove home Mitchell with a RBI single, and the Cubs were up 5-0. Shawn Maney led off the Cub's half of the 4th inning with a single, stole second, and was wild pitched to third, where Dan Hernandez picked him up with a sacrifice fly, making it 6-0 Cubs. They would move the lead to 7-0, in the 5th inning when Girard led off with a fly ball down the left field line that eluded the Yankees left fielder, and Mitchell picked him up with a RBI single. The final 4 runs for the Cubs were plated in the 6th inning when the Cubs used singles by Hernandez and Massaroni; an error; a 2-RBI double by Cutler, a RBI single for Bobby Lane, and a sac fly by Girard.
The pitching and defense for the Cubs were just as good, as starter Bobby Poulin worked 4-2/3 innings of scoreless ball, giving up just 5 hits, and two walks, while striking out 2. Leg cramps took Poulin out in the 5th. Mike Girard came in and got the Yanks out in the 5th and 6th with out allowing a run, and Randy Craft mopped up in the 7th, allowing just one run.
Josh Kelly led the way for the Yanks with 2 doubles and a single, driving in the lone Yankee run with a double in the 7th. Pat Alston added two singles in defeat.
Game two of this semi-final series is set for Wednesday night at Rogowicz field in Cook Park, in Colonie, at 6:00 pm.
