After reading the list of suspended players by MLB, I thinking MLB should go back to making this an American game. What ever happen to this being America's game. With probably 75% of the players being from another country, I think this would be a good place to start. I do realize that you do have people like Clemens, Braun and Petite, but come on, most of these guys are from Cuba or the Dominican or Japan and other island country's. How do guys from Cuba come here to play baseball, but I can't sell a t-shirt to anyone in that country or buy a cigar from there?
In fact, none of these guys even play for the USA when it comes to The World Baseball Classic. They go and play for their home country's. Their are plenty of talented plays in the US that would love a shot at making a pay check from the game they love, but instead we go bring in guys who can't even speak English and give them millions of dollars.

I don't usually make statements like this , but come on if you think about all the guys that have been busted for this crap, 98% of them are not from the US. They are from these island country's and they come from nothing and are handed millions of dollars. They have no clue what that amount of money means. Then, all they know is they have to perform in order to keep it, so they go the PEDS and other things to keep that hi level.

I wouldn't try to speak for Chris..but I will say there is probably a lot of frustration there as to what has, and is happening to the game we love...I remember back in 1986, I was a senior, pitching for Umass, when a young, awesome, Roger Clemens struck out 18 Mariners, to set an American League record...
He was the closest thing to a baseball idol I would have, after Nolan Ryan..Yet we know now, he went another direction later in his career..same with Bonds..devastating...

These kids from the Latino community want the dream so much more than the typical American kid. It is a way out for a small, small number of them that are successful. All day, every day, they play baseball....

Here, it seems, in all sports,- participate..trophy...tournament, win or lose..trophy..need an adult to "schedule" practice..I remember my first high school coaching job, parents said"What are we going to do for the end of season banquet"? "Banquet"? I said, "We wont need a banquet unless we have a championship to celebrate". They looked at me like I head 10 heads..!

How many of us remember the days when kids got together and played ball till their mama yelled "dinner time"!?

Baseball has always been a sport of repetitions, muscle memory, there is no "instant gratification",just a skill that needs to be honed time after time...

In light of all the other options our kids have these days...I do worry about Baseball's future..

Mark Maguire, Ryan Braun, Barry Bonds, Ken Caminiti, Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte ...

It's not just other countries. MLB has been its own worst enemy. It wasn't too upset when attendance records were being broken and jersey/memorabilia sales hit record revenues when Sosa, Maguire and Bonds were hitting lasers out of stadiums. Selig knew why and so did the Players Association. It was all about the money.

The "clean'' players of today should be commended for publicly coming out to say enough is enough. Can't wait to see the next bargaining negotiations. Meanwhile, seeing A-Rod on the field is sickening. The most intriguing part of the game tonight was seeing Schenectady High School native Casper Wells play for the White Sox.

Here's a thought: Pete Rose is banned from baseball for betting on his own team to win. He's banned because it's obviously against the rules, that betting could impact/influence the outcome of a game and tarnish its image and credibility ... Yet, Rose never bet on his team to lose. How is the use of PEDs different? Rose didn't bet every game, yet use of PEDs potentially influences the outcome of every game. What about Albert Bell and several others who were caught using corked bats? George Brett using pine tar above the label? Pitchers who back in the day carried nail files in their back pockets or illegal substances under their hats, inside their jerseys, inside belt buckles, flap of their cletes ... The Dodgers/Cardinals used to slant their basepaths toward the infield to keep bunts fair when Maury Wills/Lou Brock played.

Baseball has always had its cheaters, just in various forms. Is use of PEDs the absolute worst? None of the previous infractions carried a 50-game suspension or worse, except Rose, who many have argued that he didn't really impact games. With gambling, baseball worried about its image. Apparently, it doesn't worry enough to carry stiffer penalties to avoid all the cheating that has gone on for decades.

And finally, an easy bit of Trivia: Who holds the American League single-season home run record? Good to know one record hasn't fallen! And he's never been accused of cheating?

Ahhh, for the purity of the game ...

I agree with Jimmy K. MLB is equally to blame for the steroid era as any of the "guilty" players. MLB knew about the steroid use and dragged itS @ss in banning it from the game. like Jim mentioned, the Home runs and the broken records filled the stadium seats. I don't think any of us should throw stones at any of the foreign minor leaguers who have been accused of using PEDs. As Americans, some of us are ignorant to living conditions of people in other countries. Even without these deplorable living conditions, there are many who would lie, cheat and even steal for a chance at millions of dollars. I don't know what it's like to be in a position to possibly be offered Millions, so I'm not going to judge.

To sorearm: Look up a game called "rounders" then decide if baseball is purely American.

The dumb part isn't the steroid discussion - it's the "let's make this an American game again." Why on earth would you not want the best athletes in your sport playing in your league?

And it's completely laughable that anyone is gullible enough to believe that all the violators of PED abuse techniques are latino players. American born players have been cheating longer than blacks and latinos were even allowed to play in the big leagues.

By the way - I don't bat in our games because I like to give the other guys on our team a chance to play - I also catch, and it's loads easier and makes the game move along faster if the catcher isn't taking his gear on and off all the time. If you'd like to question my abilities on the field "oldsorearm" I welcome the criticism. I'm also man enough to put my real name to all my posts and not hide behind some online tough-guy moniker.

Plenty of opinions are dumb. A dumb opinion is one given that is not only absent of fact, but actually flies in the face of known facts. As Jimmy K. pointed out, most of the big name players mentioned are American born players - so if you think this is a problem exclusive of latino players or of the latino culture in general, it's a dumb opinion.

As for steroids, I maintain the best policy is one that legalizes and regulates the usage of steroids. If MLB would allow doctor prescribed steroids and HGH, players could recover faster, heal faster and get back on the field and get paid to play and not to sit and wait for recovery. Players are having Tommy John surgery now without actually having any elbow problems - is that not performance enhancement? Why is it o.k. for some things and not for others? As long as MLB establishes rules for prescribed use and how to avoid abuse, I see these procedures and drugs as a way to improve the on-field play.

There are a lot more games--athletic, electronic, plus screen time, etc---for kids in the USA to get involved with than there were 50+ years ago. Baseball used to be played by most kids growing up at one time. Not anymore. Too bad in my opinion. Now there is a new generation of drugs and enhancers that can be tempting for some to use. It's a new world. All the time.

Only one way to find out biggrin

I used to play basketball at the Albany YMCA with a guy that took steroids ...... he would go from normal size to large and muscular and then go off of them and slim back down..... he was not stable mentally though!

Personally, I prefer PEZ. Really cool dispensers and no side effects. Some of you younger guys may have to look it up.

I read this post with disbelief multiple times last night and decided it would be best not to comment right away. Guys, it's racism, discrimination and ugly nationalism all rolled up into one embarrassing little paragraph - and it stinks.

My favorite is the 98% comment. Take a look at this link and tell me how many of these white dudes are from "Cuba or the Dominican or Japan and other island country's [sic]"...

Since this is America and land of the free , I guess I will chime in and give my 2 cents as well, Yea it does stink, CHEATING always stinks! Many good posts on baseball and cheating and how MLB turned their heads when baseball was at a rating LOW and after a strike needed SOSA MCGUIRE AND BONDS TO bring it back, fill seats, sell merchandise , MADE tons of money, and NOW SELIG wants to leave his legacy as CLEANING UP BASEBALL! But maybe some people dont realize what it is like to live in a country where you dont have the opportunity to give 2 cents or make 2 cents. If I was a cuban player HELL YEA i would do whatever it took to stay from going back! Maybe the fact that most FLEE from there in Bus tires or in the bottom of produce boats and even in an airplane tire, to get away from Dictators, or some insane Militant. Unless olesorearm is native american, most of us are of immigrant decent. I do think he was trying to be more comical in his post than to be offensive, As for being able to sell a t shirt there maybe if yours werent so damm expensive! haha JK Chris, My father came from Germany when things werent soooo nice over there, he worked and most his money went to the government, when they were able to get food most was taken to go to the government, German and Russian soldiers would come house to house and make sure you didn't have any weapons or ammunition, most used to trade for food and coal and if you were lucky they would not end up raping any woman in the house so they hid his sisters in the barn in hay bails near the horses or pigs. SO yea maybe some things should be said a little more delicately and thought out before words put into writing because our league players are of many nationalities and ethnic backgrounds and come from MANY ISLANDS AND COUNTRIES,
WE are all able to play a game we all love and are fortunate still be able to play
and if someone is passing out PEZ i have a nice Reggie Jackson dispenser

If it's an Elvis PEZ dispenser, shouldn't the flavor be peanut butter and banana and bacon?

Maybe you forgot about the 1919 Black Sox , "Say it ain't so Joe" . 8 men banned from baseball. Big $ won out.
And for enhancers the 1985 Pittsburgh Drug Trials. Pittsburgh Pirates players Dave Parker, Dale Berra, Rod Scurry, Lee Mazzilli, Lee Lacy, and John Milner, as well as non-Pirates Willie Mays Aikens, Vida Blue, Enos Cabell, Keith Hernandez, Jeffrey Leonard, Tim Raines, and Lonnie Smith, were summoned to appear before a Pittsburgh grand jury. Their testimony led to the Pittsburgh Drug Trials, which made national headlines in September 1985.
Two pretty dark periods for American Baseball.
