The 2nd place Cubs got steam rolled by the Rays Thursday night at Albany Central BR. The Rays out slugged the Cubs 14-8 in a seesaw affair. The Cubs took a 4-0 lead into the top of the 4th inning, only to have the Rays tie it up, with 4 in the top of the frame. The big blow was a Mike Pickett 3-run home run. The Cubs responded in the bottom half of the inning with a grand slam from Bobby Lane to take a 8-4 lead. The Rays bats never stopped, and they answered in the top of the fifth inning with 10 runs. The big blow coming off of the bat of Mark Dabney on a grand slam with two outs in the inning. That big inning gave the Rays a 14-8 lead. The Rays would add 4 more in the top of the 6th to push the lead to 10, and darkness came before the Cubs could mount any kind of rally in the 6th, so the scoring reverted back to the end of the 5th, giving the Rays a 14-8 triumph. The Rays pounded out 14 hits to 11 hits for the Cubs. With a tight strike zone and a slick mound, the hitters had the advantage all night and the crack of the bat was heard all over the park in every inning. If this is the way the Rays are going to be swinging the bats come playoff time, WATCH OUT!!! The Cubs have 3 games in the final week, as they are locked into the number two seed with a 15-3 record. The Rays look solid, improving their record to 9-10-1, with one more against the Cubs next week.
