Cubs beat the Padres 7-5, and improve to 14-2.

The Cubs played a tough Padres club on a beautiful Tuesday night at Albany Central BR field.

The Cubs opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, when Bob Lane hit a 1-out double, and moved to third on a wild pitch.
Dave Mitchell hit a sacrifice fly to plate the first run of the game.
The Padres tied the game, in the top of the second, on a lead-off double by Dave Zebrowski and a 2-out RBI single by Hank Mora.
The Cubs jumped back in front, in the bottom of the inning, when Jim McQuade's 2-out RBI single drove in Jon Martin, who had singled and moved to third on a Padres error. The Cubs pushed that lead to 3-1, in the bottom of the 3rd inning, and again Bobby Lane was the catalyst. Bobby led off the inning with a single, stole second, and advanced to third when the throw from the catcher hit him and bounced into center field. He scored on the next pitch, when Mike Girard lined a single up the middle.

The score remained 3-1 until the top of the 5th inning. The Padres got a 1-out single from Pete Maralja. Petey Stevens sacrificed Pete to second and the Padres got their second run on a 2-out single from Erik Miller. Dom Libasi tied the game with a RBI single, and Dave Zebrowski followed with a long 2-run home run to left center, to give the Padres a 5-3 lead.

That lead would only last 2 batters. Bobby Lane led off the bottom of the 5th with his third hit of the game, and Mike Girard followed with a 2-run homer to tie the game. Dave Mitchell walked, and one out and a Padre error later, Jon Martin plated the go-ahead run with a RBI single (his second hit of the game). Brian Donnelly grounded into a fielder's choice that drove in the 7th Cubs run.

Cubs' starter, Mike Girard got the Padres out in the 6th and 7th innings without a run, to gain the complete game victory. Girard gave up 5 runs (3 earned) as he scattered 9 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 3. The Cubs move to 14-2, with the win, and are back in action tonight at 5:45 pm at Bob Moore field in Scotia, against the Reds.
