The WhizKids beat the Yankees 5-1 Friday night behind 6 strong innings from Chris Abrams, and 3 RBI from Ed Draves. The Yankees scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 1st, as Mike Aiello reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by Jim Ansel. The WhizKids responded with 4 in the top of the 2nd. Mike Lannon singled, then stole 2nd and 3rd. Anthony Torre knocked him in with a double. Torre took 3rd on a passed ball, and scored on a groundout by Jim Porter. Joe Torre and Jesse Braverman both singled, and Jim Konstantakis walked to load the bases. Draves then delivered a 2-run double to left centerfield. The WhizKids added a run in the 6th on a single by Porter, who was forced at 2nd by Joe Torre. Torre took 2nd on an error, and 3rd on a single by Ed Klopfer. Draves then had an RBI single. John Webber went the distance for the Yankees, striking out 5, including the side in the 5th. He also hit 2 booming doubles. Konstantakis pitched the 7th for the WhizKids to earn the save. Darrell Duncan was busy defensively for the WhizKids, as he had 2 putouts and 6 assists at ss. The victory came at a price, however. Joe Torre left the game in the bottom of the 6th when he collided with a Yankee who was stealing 2nd. Joe broke a bone in his foot, and took 9 stitches to close a nasty cut. He also had a huge hematoma on his right forearm. Joe is truly one of the finest gentlemen in or out of baseball, and we all wish him a complete and full recovery. Jim Porter-WhizKids
So sorry to hear about Joe's injury. He's a fine gentlemen and a pesky man at the plate and a fielder who stands his ground. Speedy recovery to you Joe.
