We are used to playing 7 innings but since we had a sunny, dry day we thought it would be a good idea to play 10 innings. To begin with Steve had 4 cancelations Sunday morning leaving him with 8 Giants. Steve felt very badly about this but asked if we could play anyway. I agreed and offered to give him a fielder, but Steve was, I think, both upset and a little po'ed at having only 8 and said he appreciated the offer but would go with 8. Once they took the field Steve's players asked him to reconsider the offer and we provided an outfielder. Now the real story-pitching. Through 3 innings the score was 0-0. The Giants plated 1 in the fourth on a Resigner single and he came around on a Nardacci double. In the fifth Konstantakis lead off with a walk and eventually scored on a sac-fly by Llera. The Black Sox finally got 1 across in the sixth, after Musella led off with a double, moved to third on a single by Lennox, and scored on a groundout to first. Going into the bottom of the seventh with the Giants up 2-1 Bonanno singled and due to a slight thigh strain was pinch run for by Buckley. Buck proceeded to steal second and third and with Solomon up with 2 strikes and 2 outs came through with a sharp single to left to tie it up. Through 9 an 1/2 innings the score remained 2-2. In the bottom of the 10th with 1 out Lennox doubled, he advanced to third on an error, the only one for the Giants all day, and the newest Black Sox player Jim Connolly came to the plate and laid down a suicide squeeze bunt with Lennox sliding under the tag of Geanellis on a valiant attempt by Lounello to get him. Bob Bolt went 9 innings, striking out 7 and giving up 1 earned run. Hell, anyone would expect a win after that performance. Greg Hoin went 6 innings, keeping the big bats of the Giants quiet for the most part, allowing only 2 runs. Jerry Solomon threw the last 4 innings allowing only 1 hit and coming away with the victory. The Sox turned 3 double plays, and turned the Giants away twice at home, once on the end of a double play. The Giants played a great defensive game committing only 1 error. The Giants were led by Nardacci, who was short of the cycle by only a homerun, and Reisinger with a hit and a run. Solomon not only pitched brilliantly but had 2 hits, including a double and and game tying rbi. Jim Connolly, 2 hits, 2 rbi, including game winning rbi. Lennox, 2 hits, including a double, and scoring winning run. A great game of baseball by both teams, and certainly both teams look forward to our next meeting in a couple of weeks.
Don - great game - lots of fun - we all got our money's worth.
You nay have misinterpreted my emotions, certainly wasn't upset with anyone or the situation. My guys all had legitimate reasons for being unable to make Sunday's game. It was just one of those things. It was what it was. I love my guys and again - there was no reason forme or anyone on the Giants to have any type of feelings about us playing with 8 guys.
Next week, we're thinking of just using a pitcher and an outfielder.
It is very refreshing to see the way Don Wixon handled a situation where his opponent was a man short. He certainly could have taken advantage of the situation and forced the undefeated Giants to play with just eight fielders. But with the respect that Don has for our league and for the game of baseball, he went out of his way to ensure that the game was played as a 9 vs 9. Even if the sun wasn't shining at New Scotland, the baseball gods shone on Donnie Wixon and rewarded his Black Sox with an exciting victory.
I say that Don's actions are refreshing because I saw the opposite end of that spectrum on Sunday morning when I arrived at the satellite field for my 12:45 game. As I laced up my cleats, I noticed that the Blue Jays had only eight fielders in their contest against the Cyclones. Routine fly balls were dropping in for hits between the two Blue Jays outfielders. The Cyclones players were just giddy as they circled the bases. So I offered to Bob Yakatan that I could play the outfield for the 6th and 7th innings. Unfortunately, when Bob asked the Cyclones manager for his approval, the answer was "no". The Cyclones could see their batting averages inching upwards and they liked it! Besides the league sub rule includes a 24-hour notice. Blah, blah, blah. Fortunately, the same baseball gods that were smiling on Donnie Wixon were also keeping an eye on the satellite field. They saw to it that the Cyclones would remain winless!
I offer my services to every manager in the 45s. I live ten minutes from New Scotland and the satellite fields. My home phone number is 475-9560 and my cell number is 366-5531. Write these numbers in the back of your score book and call me if you're in a pinch. Most managers wouldn't mind me filling in at the last minute.
In response to Don's remarks about the Cyclones.First of all The Blue Jays did play with nine players until one guy left around the sixth inning or so. I should know because they barrowed me for the entire game, and I went 3 for 4 ,scored 3 runs and stole 2 bases against my own guys. As far as the end of the game goes, as the manager I was not asked if Don could fill in. Apparently one of my players ,not me was asked if Don could fill in the end of the game.I for sure would have allowed Don to play if I was asked.I will get to the bottom of this. Thanks

Never posted before, joined so I could.on the surface it looks like the cyclones were being SOB's,but that is not the case.
Any of you who know Harold must realize he is just not like that.H sold and I are the managers of the teams involved, and neither of us was consulted on the issue until it had already been decided.First I want to thank Donnie Ball for offering to play for the Jays on such a hot and humid day it showed a lot of class. The problem was that we had already borrowed Harold J
because I was short at the start, over the course of the game the Cyclones lost some players for what ever reason, and I lost
al player to a wedding he had to attend.when Donnie made his offer both teams were down to 8 players, we were both willing to play that way.Now if we got Donnie they wanted Harold back which was only natural thus leaving us with 8 again and needing to find another player which I am sure we could have, but it just seemed too complicated.More importantly Harold was
Playing great,he was Hot,Hot,Hot,with several hits 2 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored.I may be dumb enough totake a managers job,but I am not fool enough to give the other team a player that was so HOT,which of you managers would.so Donnie it seemed worse than it was,I was being selfish and Harold was being his usual good guy and playing his heart out, thank you for your concern.I must end this by saying what a fun game it was, what with all the laughing and teasing that went on.All my guys said how much fun it was,I felt like it was an old fashion sandlot game except it was all adults enjoying the game of their youth.
