Cubs beat Rays 10-4.

On a showery night at Schenectady Babe Ruth, the Rays and Cubs were able to get in just enough baseball to avoid a rain out. The night was gray, and it was showering almost constantly, but the field was so dry to start, we were able to get in 4-1/2 innings.

Chris Dunn went 5 innings and picked up the win for the Cubbies, giving up just 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits (3 in the final inning, when the mound was getting a little greasy). Chris walked just two (one in that final inning) and struck out 4.

The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, on a one-out walk by Randy Craft, and back-to-back doubles by Mike Girard and Andy Hoyle.

The Rays would get one back in the top of the second, on a walk to Freddie McIntosh, a ground out that moved Freddie to second, a Cubs error moved him to third, and a RBI single by Jan Friedman.

The Cubs pushed the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third. Jim McQuade and Bryce Cutler led off the inning with consecutive singles, leaving men on first and third with nobody out. McQuade scored on a wild pitch and Cutler motored all the way to third, when the throw from the catcher eluded the pitcher covering the plate. Girard followed with a long fly ball to left center to score Cutler, and make the score 4-1.

The Cubs put the game away in the bottom of the 4th scoring 6 times on 4 hits (Ron Massaroni - single; McQuade 2-RBI single; Cutler - RBI single; and Craft - RBI double), 2 walks (Shawn Maney and TJ Scorsone) and one Rays' error.

With the field deteriorating and the score at 10-1, the umps pushed on to get the top of the fifth in. Mike Pickett walked, Jan Friedman doubled, and Barry Friedman singled to lead off the inning. After a ground out to second, Danny Maguire beat out an infield single. The Rays had pulled to within 10-4. Chris Dunn got the second out via strike out, and a base running blunder created the final out.

The Cubs pushed their league leading record to 8-1 with the victory. The Rays slipped to 3-5-1 with the loss.

Next up for the Cubs: Monday night at the Bob at 6:00 pm vs the Reds, then the Rays again on Tuesday night at Kuhn field in Cook Park at 6:00 pm.
