On a dark and dreary (wet and cold) Sunday at New Scotland, the Dodgers and Golden Marlins got together for an entertaining ball game.
Tony Parella led the game off for the Dodgers with a towering home run on the first pitch of the game. That was John Latorre's first pitch since coming off of the DL. John immediately settled down and gave up only one more Dodger run over the first 4 innings. John was aided by some solid defense: Mike Ferraro threw out Jim Hicks trying to steal in the first; Jim McQuade threw behind a Dodger runner at second in the third inning; the Marlins infield turned a smart 6-4-3 double play to end that same inning; and Joe Hervieux and Randy Craft executed a perfect relay (8-6-2) to cut down John Corrigan trying to score in the fourth.
During that same four innings the Marlins built a 9-2 lead. A Tom Maney walk, a Tim Brown RBI double, a Randy Craft single, and a RBI fielder's choice by Ron Lochner gave the Marlins a 2-1 lead after 1. The Marlins used small ball and a Dodger error in the second inning to score their third run in the second. The Marlins used a Maney walk and stolen base, along with consecutive singles by Craft, Mike Girard, and Ron Lochner to plate three more in the third. The Marlins last three runs were scored in the fourth utilizing 4 walks and singles by Tommie Smith and John Reel (also in his first game since coming off of the DL). Ralph Caputo came on in the fourth for the Dodgers and struck out Craft and Girard with the bases loaded to get out of the inning.
Ralph kept the Marlins off of the score board in the 5th and 6th innings as well, and that gave the Dodgers a shot at an historic come back. Mike Girard relieved John Latorre in the 5th inning and was greeted rudely by the Dodgers line up. The Dodgers got singles from Darrell Duncan, Jim Bonaparte, Wayne Newcomb, Mike Labarge, and John Cortese, along with a couple of Marlins errors and plated 4 runs to close the gap to 9-6. They would get three more Marlins errors and singles from Jim Hicks and Duncan, in the 6th, but would only get one run, as Girard limited the damage by getting a pop out to third and a comebacker when the bases were loaded and there was just one out.
With the score at 9-7, in the top of the 7th, the Dodgers would threaten but were unable to break through as Caputo and Cortese singled, but Girard induced a ground out, a pop out and a fly to center to end the game.
The Marlins improve to 1-2, with the win and look to get to .500 next Sunday against the Cougars.
