guys - need your help: i'm looking high and low for replacements and i'm borrowing guys.
the 55+ peppers started the season with 14 members on our roster with three emergency players. since march, we've lost seven guys from the main roster, three of them permanently, four for who knows how long.
my starting center fielder, had rotator cuff surgery in late march after falling in an indoor soccer match. my starting shortstop, had labrum surgery on his throwing shoulder last week. both are gone for the season. my third baseman and cleanup hitter sprained his left knee doing pre-game sprints at satellite last week and he's out 4-6 weeks; an all-around utility player sprained a knee in february, and, after it wasn't healing with therapy, told me last week he's retiring. my starting catcher's bosses sent him to florida in late april to work and he hasn't returned yet. last week i learned my third pitcher will miss every thursday game.
and yesterday, my starting catcher (a catcher-in-training), pulled a groin muscle playing in a 45 game and thinks he may miss a week or more.
things like this happen to other managers, though i may be inching toward a record.
to keep going, my teammates and i are actively looking for replacements. i'm also borrowing guys from other teams. i understand that, after getting permission from other managers, i might use a player from another team. if he's a pitcher he can't pitch for us. all borrowed players must start and bat 7th or lower in the order.
this coming week, americans ed rogers and jim wing have agreed to join me for our game against the cards. for which i'm very grateful.
so if anybody who turns 55 by 12/31/13 wants extra at-bats or fielding time, give me a call (459-6854) or send me an email (mhart2@nycap.rr.com.)
we'll make it through the season. even if we have to limp on one leg to do it.
mike
