Tuesday night the Dodgers and Cubs engaged in a well-played tight game. Pitching and defense were dominant as usual, when these two teams meet. The Cubs got on the board in the top of the first. Mike Girard was hit by a pitch and Ron Lochner drove a pitch to deep center field driving Jim Shook right up against the wall. Shook jumped as he reached the wall. He was unable to catch the drive, but was able to knock it down and keep it in the park. That play wound up saving a run. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, Andy Hoyle hit a deep fly ball to score the games first run. After a Dave Mitchell single moved Lochner to third, Andy Sardella stuck out the Cubs 6-hitter to end the threat. The Dodgers got even in the bottom of the first with a two-out rally. Mike Burns singled, stole second, and was singled home by Alejandro Reyes. The Cubs would retake the lead in the top of the 3rd inning. Bobby Lane single and went all of the way to third on an errant pick-off throw by Sardella. Mike Girard singled through the right side to score Lane, and the Cubs were in front 2-1. Ron Massaroni would make that lead stand up until the bottom of the 5th. The Dodgers plated 2 unearned runs on singles by Dave Guiliano, Ryan Johnson, and Reyes, along with a very untimely error (two outs and no runs in yet).
Jim Shook came on in relief of Sardella and shut the Cubs out over the last 3 innings to seal the victory. The Cubs had a chance to tie the game in the top of the 6th inning, when Andy Hoyle led off the inning with a double off the wall, but Shook retired the next 3 Cubs on a strike out, grounder to short, and a pop to third. The rumors of Mr. Shook's demise (shoulder injury) are MUCH EXAGERATED! The loss drops the Cubs to 3-1 on the year. These two teams meet again at Bob Moore on Monday at 8:15 pm. It should be another great game!
