The Dodgers and Giants met on Sunday with Caputo facing off against Konstantakis.
Dodgers strike first in the top half of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Newcomb walks and steals second then scores on a Corrigan single. Hicks reaches on a fielders choice to put two on ... Corrigan scores on a Caputo RBI single. Bonaparte gets hit by a pitch to load the bases .... Cortese doubles on a 3-2, 2 out pitch to drive in all 3 runners and put the Dodgers up 5-0.
The Giants start right off with a leadoff single by Bolt ... who then got picked off (or was called out on a pickoff at least ) and that was followed by two flyouts to end the inning. Dodgers plate one more in the 3rd on a Hicks single followed by two stolen bases and an errant throw to third allowed him to score.
Caputo went four innings allowing just two hits and no runs .... fast forward to the bottom of the 5th when the Giants score three on two walks, a Bolt single and a throwing error to cut the score to 6-3. Giants would add another run in the 6th on singles by Reisinger, Phillips and Smaka. With two on and two outs the Dodgers turned to Darrell Duncan to get a much needed out. After a walk to load the bases Duncan induced a popup to end the threat and put the score at 6-4 after six innings. In the top of the 7th the Dodgers start out with Duncan reaching on an error followed by a Bonaparte bunt single and a walk to Labarge to load the bases with no outs. Cortese delivers a run with a sacrifice fly for his 4th RBI of the day to put the Dodgers up 7-4 ...... then an Obertubessing walk followed by a Kisselburgh single, a Conlin single and a couple of errors let the Dodgers plate 3 more runs to take a 10-4 lead.
After two outs the Giants got two on but were unable to plate any more runs so the Dodgers end up with a 10-4 victory.
It didn't help the Giants to have the leading hitter in the league on the sidelines in shorts ..... but it may very well help them in the long run to get Mark Dabney healthy again ..... he has hit the snot out of the ball with a bad leg!
That puts us at 11-4 and clinches third place.
A big improvement from last year when we were 3-13 and finished in 10th place
Congrats John on a nice win. I've said all along that the Dodgers are legitimate when everyone shows up. John Cortese may be the most underrated player in all of CDMSBL. He played LF flawlessly and he's a solid hitter. Dabney or no Dabney, the Giants take pride in whoever shows up and takes the field. I'd stand by Sunday's lineup any day - except for maybe me beng on the mound!
To clear up the picture a bit, Giants fall to 13-2 and face Black Sox at 10 a.m. Saturday at New Scotland. A Giants win would clinch the regular-season title. A loss and a Marlins win would give the Marlins the R-S title and a first-round bye in the playoffs.
