Jon Martin led the way for the Cubs against the Yankees Wednesday night at Central Babe Ruth. Jon started and pitched six strong innings along with going 3 for 4, scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 at the plate. Jon scattered 8 hits and just 2 walks, while striking out 3, in his six innings of work.
The Cubs also got a solo home run from Steve Lounello; a double and single from Mike Girard; and two singles each from Ron Lochner, Randy Craft, and Dave Mitchell as part of a 17-hit attack against Yanks starter, Lex Herlett. The Yankees got a solo HR from Eric Duemler, in the first inning and three consecutive hits (Paul Post-single; Pat Alston-double; Rich Robertson 2-RBI single), in the 6th inning, to account for their 3 runs.
The Cubs moved to 15-1-1, and clinched the number one overall seed, with the 8-3 victory. They will close out the regular season on Friday night at Bob Moore with a game against the A's.
That's why last night was the clincher. Even if we lose Friday night, we would end up at 15-2-1. The best the Hummers can do is 14-2-1. According to Commissioner Smith, the regular season ends at the close of games on Friday night.

Our season is cut short?! I'd rather play the birds again rather than the highlanders for a 3rd time. No offense Marcus. So let me get this straight, Cubbies play the A's for a 3rd time and never play the birds this season. That is not a true test to determine seeding. Extend the season, that's what we pay to play for. I am with you on that one! We pay to play the full 20! HummnBirds vs Cubs would have been two of the most competitive games of the year. The double header scheduled and rained out last Saturday had no chance to be rescheduled because this week we already had 3 games scheduled. One more week! One more week! Let them play! Let them Play!
None taken, I hear ya ~ I'd want to play the best teams too if I was on a good team and maybe the 35's oughta look into the tier system of regular season scheduling of games like the 45's do? Works well that better teams get to play the other top teams more and the lesser teams get to play the lesser talented teams more as well... Much more competitive for everyone... But since it's playoff time in the 35's now, the best teams will rise and meet anyways and the seedings don't really matter if you're a top team, you just go out and play your game against whoever's in front of you and move on until you face the other top teams, simple as that...
