After suffering their first two losses of the 2012 season at the hands of the defending champs last week, the Golden Marlins faced another double header, this time against two different teams.
Game one was a tough game against the Reds. The Reds started Joey Burns and the Fish went with Jim Ansel. The Golden Marlins jumped on Mr. Burns for an early run, when lead off man Tom Maney singled and stole second and Ron Lochner scored Tom with a RBI single. Mr. Ansel set the Reds down in order, in the bottom of the first, setting the tone by striking out 2 of the first 3 batters he faced. The Marlins would get two more hits in the top of the second, but failed to score, when Jim Ansel lined a shot aright at the shortstop, who threw to second to double off the Marlins runner to end the inning. Dr. Ansel would scatter 4 hits over his 5 innings of shut out work, while walking just one and striking out 5. Jon Martin came on in the 3rd inning for the Reds and kept them in the game, facing the minimum 6 batters in the 3rd and 4th. The Marlins would strike for 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning, on consecutive one-out singles by Mike Clary and Phil Gadomski; a walk to Mike Ferraro; a 2-RBI single by Randy Craft; a single by Jim Ansel; and a RBI single by Jim McQuade. Phil Gadomski would pitch the final two innings for the Marlins, giving up just one run on a lead-off double by Ron McCarthy and a 2-out RBI single by David Schillinger. The final score was 4-1, in a crisply played game (only one error and 4 walks combined between the two teams) that took less than 2 hours to complete. This Reds team will be a tough out in the upcoming playoffs. They are at least 5 quality pitchers deep, play solid defense, and have at least 9-10 very tough outs in the batting order. Their roster is built for the playoffs, and I expect to see them go very deep into the post season.
Game two saw the Golden Marlins jump out to a quick lead in the first inning. Randy Craft led of with a single, Tim Brown followed with a walk, Mike Griard loaded the bases with a single, and Ron Lochner cashed them all in with a line drive grand slam home run to left center. The Fish would pick up another run in the inning with two walks, a fielders choice, and a RBI single by Mike Ferraro. The Blue Jays showed some heart, closing the gap to 5-4 in the second with a hit batter (Hunt) and 4 singles (Ross, Gianakos, Aiello, and Foreman). The Marlins would keep scoring (3 runs in the 2nd; 2 runs in the 3rd; 2 runs in the 4th; and 1 more in the 6th), but John Latorre, Ron Lochner, and Mike Girard would limit the Blue Jays to just one more run. The final score was 13-5, pushing the Marlins record to 10-2, solidifying their hold on second place in the standings. Ron Lochner led the way with 5 RBI's for the Fish. John Reel, Tim Brown, Mike Girard, Mike Ferraro, and Jim Ansel added multiple hit games for the Marlins. Mike Aiello, Dave Foreman, and Scott Ross had two hits each for the Blue Jays.

Hey, there are a lot of teams who can use a pitcher whose 2nd warmup pitch nearly went over the backstop!!! It almost looked like the pitch he hit for a HR! Ronnie, I got your back; I'll be your agent. jk
