Giants 4, Vets 0


Three Giants pitchers combined on a 1-hitter and Jim Whitford lined a two-run single in the second inning as the Giants improved to 4-1.

Steve Lounello gave up just one hit in five innings and Whitford and Mike Kane each tossed a hitless inning to lead the Giants.

The Giants added two more in the third to ice it.

Wayne Philips led off the second with a booming double to left. Mark Dabney followed with a sharp single to left. After Dabney up to second, Whitford lined a single to left-center to score both runners.

In the third, Kane led off with a single and Lounello followed with a double to left-center to score Kane. After a groundout to second, Lounello came home on a wild pitch to wrap up the scoring.

Meanwhile, Lounello gave up a clean first-inning single to Rick Kostar. After Ken Zimmer led off the second inning with a walk, he was doubled off first on a fly to center. Lounello then retired the next 11 batters before giving way to Whitford in the 6th. Matt Lenung reach on an error to start the sixth, but was erased on a double play when Billy Kirvan popped to first on a hit & run.

Kane retired the Vets in order in the 7th to seal it.

For the Giants, Kane doubled, singled and scored a run from the leafoff spot; Lounello doubled twice, scored a run and drove in another.

For the Vets, Vince Kostar at 2B had 3 putouts and two assists, covering a lot of ground and Jon Atwell gave up just 7 hits in going the distance.
