The rain held off for one night at New Scotland and the Dodgers and Golden Marlins got a very well-played game in, especially after such a long layoff.
The story early in this game was Jim Ansel. For the first four innings he faced the minimum in setting down the first 12 Dodgers' batters in order. He struck out 2 and the Marlins defense made all of the plays behind him including a marvelous stretch and pick of a throw in the dirt by first baseman Tom Maney, in the third inning.
The Golden Marlins built a 4-0 lead through the first four innings, while Ansel kept the Dodgers' bats quiet. The Fish plated a run in the first on a Jim Ansel walk, a stolen base by courtesy runner Tom Maney, and a two out RBI double by Ron Lochner. The Marlins added 2 runs in the 2nd inning. The first run came on a walk to Mike Ferraro, a stolen base, a wild pitch, and a RBI single by Jim McQuade. McQuade broke for second and TJ Scorsone executed a perfect drag bunt for a single. A fielder's choice by Tom Smith would move both runners into scoring position, and a slow roller to first by Joe Hervieux scored McQuade with the third Marlins run. The Marlins fourth run came in the third when Tom Maney led off with a single, stole second, and was driven home when Mike Girard singled up the middle.
Just when the Marlins were feeling very comfortable, here came the Dodgers in the bottom of the 5th inning. John Corrigan started things off with a double to the left center field gap. A Ralph Caputo single put runners on first and third with nobody out. A Dave Reed sacrafice moved Caputo to second, and a Nick Kanellis single drove home both runners. Henry Field was nicked on the shirt sleeve with an Ansel pitch, and a single by Jim Bonaparte loaded the bases with just one out. Ansel then induced a pop fly to second base for the second out, to set the stage for the play of the game: John Cortese singled to center, scoring Kanellis, but Marlins center fielder Skip Treece charged the ball and made a perfect throw to the cut off man and the relay throw was in time to nail Field at the plate to end the inning and preserve a 4-3 lead for the Marlins. The Skipper still has it!!
The Marlins would get an important insurance run in the top of the 6th inning. The inning started with what looked like a sure double to the right center field gap by Girard, but Wayne Newcombe made a great running catch to snare the drive at the last second. Ron Lochner followed with a solid double (making Newcomb's catch a run saver). Mike Clary singled Lochner home and the Fish took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
Mike Girard came on in relief of Jim Ansel and got the first two Dodgers' hitters on a stike out and a tapper back to the mound. Wayne Newcomb would single and John Corrigan would walk before Girard coaxed Ralph Caputo to ground out to short to end the inning.
The Marlins got 2 more insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a two out rally. Joe Hervieux singled and stole second. Skip Treece followed with his second single of the night, to put runners on first and third. Skip immediately stole second and Tom Maney followed with a two run single to push the lead to 7-3.
Dave Reed led off the Dodger's 7th inning with a single and Nick Kanellis reached on an error on what looked like a tailor-made double play grounder to second. Girard snuffed out the potential rally when he got consecutive pop outs to short and catcher, and then induced a grounder to short to end the game.
The Fish move to 3-0 with the win and the Dodgers drop to 3-2.
This plate umpire has been blocked from any future Golden Marlins games. Every time he umpires there is a problem. I just went on Arbiter and requested that he not be scheduled for any more of our games. It is a great tool!!!
Ohh, so it was someone who's on both the Cubbies and Marlins... Of course that doesn't narrow the choices too awfully much! But wow, I better go to arbiter and nix that guy for the Highlanders... Err, or hell, maybe if I left him he could help us win a game??? Hmmm...
And I just got word it is pouring down rain in Burnt Hills, so sheesh, another possible rainout... Damn this is getting old...
Speaking of which, was it our beloved Founder himself by chance? Or did I already guess him last time? Gotta go back and look...

uh oh ... that poor guy will never ump again once we all take advantage of it .... or else he will be forced to cut his strike zone down to the one that is already way bigger than the real strike zone that the regular umps already call

No Dodger games for him either
There is also an evaluation form online at arbiter that we can use as well .... i filled one out for that game.
We obviously don't want to go and bash every ump for every bad call but in an instance where they truly ruin / alter a game this is a valuable tool for us to use. We are hiring them to do a job for us and deserve a good effort.
The strike zone in this game was beyond big ..... i think Billy Fuccillo would describe it as HUGE ..... it was applied evenly to both teams and in that regard did not impact the outcome but it ruined the game .... there were people called out on pitches they literally could not reach.
