The Damn Yankees broke open a 5-5 deadlock in the top of the sixth inning with a 6-run outburst and rode ageless Billy Kervan's arm into the sunset for an 11-5 six-inning victory at New Scotland tonight. Rob Shellhouse carried the big stick for the Yanks with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including a big two-run double that opened the floodgates in the sixth. Joe Hervieux added a two-run double with what proved to be the game-winning hit, and Jim Ansel and Ray Demers were each 2-for-3 with RBIs. Kervan worked in and out of trouble, giving up six hits and eight walks, but reached back to strike out five batters, including the final out of the game with two runners on. Leading the way for the Marlins was Randy Wood and Skip Treece with two hits each. It was great to see Skip back on the field chasing down fly balls, running the bases and looking spry. Wayne Newcombe pitched five strong innings for the Yankees before the wheels fell off in the sixth.
Skipper, so happy to see you back healthy and better than ever! Can't wait to see you again and hopefully hear Dee cheering on the sidelines.
And in the same vein, it is also GREAT to see Randy Wood has returned as well. Randy has had tragedies and health problems in the recent past - more than anyone should have to incur - and he's a class guy.
People like these two are why winning is secondary.
Skippy, how does it feel being back?? We and a few others in the league share the same setbacks, but we shake it off and continue to............ Randy, it's great to see you back as well, playing ball at our age ( me/60) is quite special. Most guys our age think we are NUTS!!! Go's to show what passion means!!!
