A Diamond. 5 pm start. Perfect baseball weather. Arachnids lefty Bob Bolt making his first start of the season having thrown just 4 innings over the previous 16 games. . Ralph Caputo gets the nod for the Reds. After retiring the first two hitters , Bolt surrenders a single to JEFF Friedman but gets Dave Mitchell on a line out to the pitcher to end the top of the first. Lee Madsen leads off for the spiders and reaches on an E-5. Madsen steal 2nd. Bolt singles and moves Madsen to third. TJ Scorsone brings Madsen home with a sac fly. Stefan Koutsakis also singles but the inning ends with a 1-0 Arachnids lead. Fast forward to the top of the third with the score still 1-0. Dan Durback opens with a single for the Reds. John Reel works a walk. With one out Jimmy JASIEWICZ gets hit real hard on the lower left leg. Gimpy, but on two legs, Jazz chooses to run and that loads the bases for the Reds with one out. Spiders-we have a situation. Bolt buckles down and induces a Joe Burns pop-up to second for the 2nd out. Bases still loaded. Jeff Friedman comes up and hits a scorcher right back at Bolt who snares it and flips to first for the third out. WHEW ! Bottom of the third Bolt grounds to first. One out. Scorsone walks, steals 2nd, and advances to 3rd on a passed ball. Rick Saidenberg walks. Caputo attempts to pick off Saidenberg who got caught in a rundown. Scorsone breaks for home as the ball is tossed to the second baseman who did not handle it cleanly. Scoresone scores and Saidenberg is safe at 2nd. Pitching change. CB Abrams relieves Caputo. Koutsakis flies to left. 2 outs. Pat Alston comes up big with a single knocking in Saidenberg the inning ends with a 3-0 spiders lead after four full. Bolt faces four Reds in the top of the fifth yielding a single to Doug Hall but no runs. Bottom of the fifth sees JEFF Friedman take the mound for the Reds retiring all three batters he faced . Scorsone relieves Bolt and sets down the Reds 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. Bottom of the sixth Wayne Nicholson leads off and grounds out 4-3. Madsen walks and pilfers second. Bolt grounds to 3 unassisted. Scorsone singles and plates Madsen. Saidenberg K's looking. 4-0 Spiders after 6 full. Top of the seventh with 3-4-5 coming up for the Reds. Friedman grounds out 6-3. Dave Mitchell flies out deep to center for the second out. Jack Griffin is nailed by a Scorsone fastball and goes to first with two outs. Joe Parker hits a grounder to Pat Alston at first who fields it cleanly, tags the bag and the game is in the books. Arachnids win 4-0 to advance to the 65 finals starting this Thursday against the Yankees at A Diamond, 5 PM start. There were just eight hits in the ball game, four by each team. Doug Hall of the Reds went 2-2, the only player to have more than one hit. No extra base hits. Fine pitching and fine defense by these two teams.
