The Arachnids came into the game with a fair amount of anxiety knowing that the Cardinals team has the talent to upset anybodys apple cart on any given night. In their previous game, they walked off the field with a 10-8 well earned victory against the Peppers to reach the semifinals. The Arachnids opted to start the battle tested Wayne Nicholsen on the mound and it proved to be the right choice. Long story short, Nicholsen went the first 5 innings holding the Cardinals scoreless while allowing 2 hits. Stefan Koutsakis came on in the sixth and pitched two more scoreless innings also giving up 2 hits to earn the save. JEFF Martin and Bill Chichester pitched for the Cardinals. I have to say, Chichester made this writer look like a fool when Bill threw me a knuckleball that was all over the bleeping place on the first pitch. And I went after it. Missed it by probably 2 feet. Leading the Cardinals offensively were David Sprague with a nice double and JEFF Martin, who went 2-2. Offensive leaders for the Arachnids were Ben Phillips 2-2, TJ Scorsone 2-3, Darrell Duncan 2-3, Tom King 2-4, and Ricky Saidenberg 3-4. Final score, Arachnids win 14-0. Now these old spider guys play the waiting game to see who makes it to the finals by winning the Yankees Reds game tonight. Finals start on Thursday, 5 PM, Watervliet High School. A little bad news to add. Arachnids Ben Phillips suffered a torn upper leg muscle and broken hand late in the game when he tripped going into second base. He had reached on a line single and was moving ahead on a ground ball by the next batter. That is a major bummer for all of us, especially for Ben. Hes so loves the game. Shame to see his playing season end that way.
