Good friends and November teammates got together at New Scotland last night, and a great game broke out. At least it was a great game through 5 full innings. The Cubs held a 5-3 advantage over the Giants entering the top of the 6th inning. The Cubs defense, in the top of the 6th inning, set back the game of baseball a couple of hundred years. We would have been better playing with milk cartons for gloves. The Cubs committed 4 errors in the inning, on routine plays, and the Giants took full advantage scoring 6 runs, on just 3 singles, to take a 9-5 lead. That was the ball game. All of the good play up to that point was erased by the poor play in one inning.
Ron Massaroni was terrific in pitching 7 full innings scattering 10 hits and 5 runs, while walking one and striking out 2. The Giants out hit the Cubs 13 - 10, including a Jimmy Keegan home run in the top of the second. Ron Massaroni had 3 hits in support of his own cause, with Mark Massaroni and Ron Smaka adding two hits each.
The Cubs 10 hits were more spread out, as Andy Hoyle was the only Cubs' hitter to record 2 hits, and the other 8 hits were produced by 8 of the other 11 batters. It was a shame that the game didn't finish how it started, but that is how it goes, when you don't make the simple plays, especially against the 5-time defending champs.
Just glad that this wasn't a playoff game. Looking forward to the next time we meet.
