Joe Burns threw a 5-hitter, struck out 7, and allowed 1 unearned run as the Whiz Kids defeated the Giants 8-1 Thursday night. The game almost didn't get played, as the rain came in at 5, but when it stopped 20 minutes later, the field at New Scotland came through!
Burns got the Whiz on the board when he led off the bottom of the first with a single, moved to second on a single by Mike Kane, and scored on a sac fly by Gene Hallenbeck. They added a run in the second when John Cortese reached on a fielder's choice, and scored on a 2-out single by Dan Maguire. Greg Mangione hit a 1-out double in the 4th, and scored one out later on a hit by Cortese. The Whiz opened it up with a 4-run 5th inning. Bob Holmes singled home Maguire and Burns, Hallenbeck drove in Kane with a sac fly, and Reggie Flansburg had a 2-out single to score Holmes.
The Giants scored in the 7th on a hit batter, an error, and after Burns struck out the next two Giants, Jim Keegan hit a single to right-center. Burns struckout the next batter to end the game.
Darrel Duncan had two singles for the Giants, while some nice defensive plays in the outfield by Shawn Martin and Cortese left a few other Giants shaking their heads.
It should be another good game when these two teams meet again.
