I'm surprised. I was at New Scotland at around 1:30 today and that field had been worked on and looked playable.

I guess Watervliet has different issues.

It wasnt the baseballl gods speaking. The game was called off by one manager without speaking to the other team. Im not sure why or even why it was allowed.

We have a protocol in place and it wasnt followed and instead of getting a game in we now face yet another makeup game

I work in Latham john, and I went and soaked my sneakers in the outfield grass. I was not going to put my already hurt team on the field in those conditions. I was the home team manager I made the call and notifications as per league rules. Messaged Ray as well.

Dear 55+ Gentlemen, Since the saga is being posted here publicly I'll state the protocol: At Watervliet HS, Dennis Lane determines playability, he contacts me, usually by mid afternoon. I then contact the home mgr. he then contacts the umpires, the opposing mgr, and then his team. This is also the case for New Scotland, Schenectady, and Legion, where the field personnel contact me first. At Gruner Jerry Hawkins will contact the opposing team and handle umps and then contact me.

We are all playing a lot of games now. We have injured players and otherwise occupied players. This is part of the price of rain and our need to finish the first nice games by June 30th. I sympathize with Mgr's trying to both get games in and protecting their interest, and the health of their players. However the whole must move on. I encourage borrowing when team numbers go weak, and multiple games in a week have to occur to move the schedule. We are currently looking at 4 makeups with two weeks to go till June 30. It is doable if not inconvenient. Getting today's (Friday the 14th's) three games in will tell me a lot about accomplishing that. We still may have a slight spill over into July and a mixing of this phase one portion of our schedule with the next "like opponents" phase of our schedule to get to 13 games for all teams.

So lets rely on our field personnel to make playability calls. Its impartial and usually correct. You can then react by following the protocol as this Gm did. I'd like to add that posting here is not on the protocol but very helpful to the need to communicate to all concerned.

John Reel 55+ commissioner.
