This is a first for me! Being on a team that beats a team from Puerto Rico is definitely a first for me. The Cubs handed the ball to Jimmy Konstantakis to hopefully get 5 or 6 innings of solid pitching, and then we would "piece together" the back half of the game, depending on the game situation.
Jimmy started strong getting through a scoreless first inning, to get the Cubs up for the first inning, without facing a deficit. The Cubs would convert that effort into an ambush, that gave the Cubs a 4-0 lead early. The rally started with two outs and nobody on. Mike Girard hit a bomb into the left field gap, and pulled into second with a double. For the second game in a row, Dave Mitchell drove in Girard from second for the first run of the game, this time with a solid single. Ron Lochner singled Mitchell to third, and Jerry Rosen then stroked another solid single to plate Mitchell, and move Lochner into scoring position. Dean Little "kept the train moving" with a RBI single, and Darrell Duncan gave Albany its 6th straight hit with two outs and drove in the 4th Cubs run.
Jimmy K did what all good pitchers do after getting an early lead. He threw strikes and gave the Cubs 5 innings of goose eggs for the Puerto Rico A's. In the 3rd inning, the Cubs offense extended the lead to 6-0. Bob Bolt led off with a single, and Randy Craft followed with a perfect drag bunt for a single. Girard loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Dave Mitchell hit into a double play, but the 5th Cubs run scored on the play. Ron Lochner then drove Craft home with a RBI single, and the Cubs had a 6-0 lead.
The Puerto Rico A's got on the board against Konstantakis in the top of the 6th inning. They loaded the bases, with one out, on with a HBP and 2 walks. A single drove in two runs, but Jimmy K bore down and got a fly out and a force out at second, to get out of the jam with a 6-2 lead still in place.
The Cubs got an insurance run, in the bottom of the sixth on a Randy Craft double, a Girard single, and a sacrifice fly by Mitchell.
Jimmy K walked the first batter in the 7th, but got the second batter on a pop out to first. When he also walked the next hitter, the decision was made to bring Mike Girard on in relief. Girard threw exactly one pitch and induced a grounder to short that was turned into a 6-4-3 double play. The Cubs were on to the 8th inning with a 7-2 lead.
Girard gave up just one run in the 8th inning, and pitched a scoreless 9th inning to close out the 7-3 victory.
The Cubs roll into their final Round Robin game vs the Tri-State Titans (from NC), on a high note. The playoff spot has now been sewn up, and the goal tomorrow is to get to 4-1 without using any playoff bullets! The game goes off at 9:30 am tomorrow morning at the Cardinal complex in Jupiter.
