One of the really good guys in our league today was injured at first base. Don was playing first base today when a throw from one of his infielders was off just a bit and Ryno from our team was running down to first base to beat the throw and the collision was heartbreaking. First off I would like to say that if we had a league rule to implement the use of two bags on first base Don would not be in the hospital at this time. The collision was not the fault of Ryno or Don but the way the game has been played for years and its clearly a hazard that we shouldn't have to worry about as senior men if we would implement the two bag policy at first base. The safety record of using the two bag policy at first base speaks for itself and I for one would vote YES to have it implemented for our league!!! Lets think hard about this tragic accident that happened today and change the one bag to a double bag policy at first base so collisions at first base don't happen again!!! I pray Don is ok.
Keep in mind we rent our fields so it isn't necessarily something we can control. I'm not sure if there is a way to add them on a temporary basis and then remove them.
Very good point Mike.Last Tuesday in our 30 playoff game there was a collision at first base that sent our first baseman Len Hunter to the hospital with 4 broken ribs and ending his season.
You can purchase single spike type base that can be installed before each game and then remove. They are a soft style base that you just have to push in 2 or 4 metal spikes to secure them. They run from $30 and up. I think the problem would be that each team would need to carry one, since we really don't have one home field to play on. I think there are cheap drop down bases also.
