The curious thing about this game is that Don Wixon never fell down....but Bill Smith crashed twice. This should have been enough of an omen that the Bucs were up to something. Smith, the starting pitcher was cruising along after an early 1st base hustle play resulted in him sprawled over the bag , some blood, but with the ball in glove . Later he dove and pushed a key bunt attempt foul after a long chase up the third base line. He took himself out having injured his shoulder. Bill's pitching variety and backwards approach helped him hold the strong Dodgers lineup down. Many weaker than usual hits and some key K's had them , as they say, frustrated. MGR Jim Dalton releived with Darnell Baker who continued till the games end but the Dodgers took the lead. up one, then two. The Dodgers seem to have base runners on but failed to get the huge inning that the Pirates have provided in so many previous games. Dodger Ric Lafreddo didn't fall down either and got out of several jams in his complete game. He entered the final inning looking for the win but the Bucs had other ideas. Joey D. who had struggled to this point, drove a one out , two strike ,down the pike, fast ball into the gap in left to score two runs for the tie. Yes we celebrate ties!
Billy's hustle and determination never a surprise, but the blood? uh oh! I don't believe he likes the color red :)
And with the tie, I believe Billy remains undefeated as a starting pitcher (or reliever) during his 20-plus-years in CDMSBL. OK, so he's only started a handful of games, but who's counting?!
