The Cubs improved to 3-0 on the young season, beating the Nolan Propane Cardinals 12-0, in 5 innings Friday night at the brand new A-Diamond, in Schenectady.
Cardinals starter, Jim Bonaparte kept the Cubs bats quiet for the first two innings, but, in the bottom of the 3rd, the Cubs grabbed a 2-0 lead, on a lead-off double by Kevin Jackson; a one out triple by Scott Ross; and a RBI single by Paul Miles.
Things got a little out of control for the Cards, in the bottom of the 4th, as the Cubs sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring 9 runs on 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 Cardinal errors. The big hit in the inning was a 2 run double by Jim McQuade.
Meanwhile Cubs starter, Mike Girard, was sailing through the first 4 innings giving up just 2 base runners (both on errors). He allowed no hits or runs while striking out 2. Scott Ross came on to pitch the top of the 5th for the Cubs, and it looked like the Cards would get a rally going as Ross walked two of the first 3 hitters, wrapped around a fielders choice at second. With runners on 1st and 3rd and 1 out, John Sheehan lifted a fly ball to medium center field. Girard (only in center field so that Ross could pitch) caught the ball coming in and threw a strike to home, where Paul Miles applied the tag, and the rally was over without a run.
The game ended early, when the Cubs scored their 12th run on 2 walks and 2 HBP's; with the last HBP of Paul Miles representing the walk off RBI.
The Cubs ended up with 12 runs on 11 hits. Paul Miles, Mike Girard, Marc Lochner, and Kevin Jackson led the way with 2 hits each. Scott Ross, Miles, and Jim McQuade all had 2 RBI's each.
Cubs' pitchers Girard and Ross shared a 5-inning no hitter, surrendering just 2 walks and allowing just two other runners on errors, while striking out 2.
The A-Diamond field was a pleasure to play on. We look forward to many more games on this field in the future!
