Capital Division Update

I was waiting for the thermometer to hit 50 before I posted an update on the new Capital Division! A quick review for any of you who have not been following the bulletin board.

The CDMSBL has started a Capital Division. Although the division is not age-specific, it was started primarily to give participants 60 and over an opportunity to play more baseball. We are doing very well in that age group with over thirty players signed on. We are also happy to have a handful of younger - 50ish - players who would like to join the division. If we can attract more players in the 45 - 60 crowd, we will organize games for that generation. It was also discussed at the BOD level that we should extend the division to players as young as 18 because roster spots are scarce in our current 18+ division. If you know of anyone looking to play some baseball this summer, send them my way.

The division will be run differently than our more formal age groups. To join the Capital Division, players will pay a $30 registration fee. Players will then be notified each week and invited to play. The first 24 players who respond to that invitation will be placed onto a roster. One team will wear red jerseys, the other team will wear blue jerseys. We will be selling Capital Division jerseys but players can wear color-appropriate jerseys from their personal collections. Games will be played on Saturday mornings at Watervliet High School. There will be one umpire. Players will pay $10 for each game that they play. Any player who does not bring $10 cash to the game will be permanently banned from the Capital Division and forced to join the Cougars!

The overriding theme of these games is to get everyone plenty of at-bats and playing time in the field. Because the rosters will change from week to week, there will not be standings or playoffs or participation trophies. Just good summer baseball in a relaxed atmosphere.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you would like to join the Capital Division. I can be reached at dballjr@nycap.rr.com

Thank you.

And your first duty as a new Cougar pitcher will be to "brush back with extreme prejudice" our esteemed "Mr. Yuks," Don Ball.

Uh, just kidding...

Frank - I only pick on you because I know you have a good sense of humor! I am finding some of the managers in the 55 division are pretty sensitive. I'll have to be careful where I stand in the batter's box. I think I'll be safe if I stand close to the plate! HA HA HA HA!

C'mon warm weather.

Ouch! I should know better than to trade barbs with the likes of you, Donny BaseBall!

Nonetheless, as I never learn, give me a few days to come up with a worthy reply.

Don:

I've been noticing that there are some older guys signing up as free agents for the softball leagues around the area lamenting that there is no baseball. Would it be o.k. to extend an invite to those guys? I found a 42 year old guy who wants to play hardball but can't find a spot on a 33 team (as an example).

Rob - Please have them contact me. I have been getting inquiries from guys in the league who are in their 40s and 50s. We are also reaching out to a group of players who couldn't find a roster spot in the 18s. If we have enough interest we could start division in any or all of these divisions. Thanks.

Don
